Industrial
Quality 2016 Pittsfield Historical Society Calendar
Pittsfield’s cotton mill, erected on the Suncook River in 1827,
at one time employed over 200 people and is
highlighted in the Pittsfield Historical Society’s 2016
calendar. Still only $10 at several Pittsfield locations.
The industrialization of Pittsfield dates back to the Town’s
founding in the 1780’s with John Cram’s saw and gristmills on
the Suncook River with more gristmills, sawmills, tanneries, a
cotton mill, woodworking shops, a clock manufacturer, carriage
makers, fulling mills, a distillery, blacksmith shops, a
foundry, a water pump builder, brick works, a charcoal business,
and a marble engraving factory, subsequently added in those
early years. Later the H. A. Tuttle suit manufacturer
began in 1855, the gas industry came in 1887, Globe
Manufacturing arrived in 1901, the Pittsfield Cheese Company in
1917, the Canning Factory in 1923, Pittsfield Weaving in 1927,
Catamount Weaving and the Rich Plan started in the 1950’s.
The new 2016 Pittsfield Historical Society calendar depicts some
of this industrial development with thirteen photographs and
accompanying descriptions. Calendars are now available for
purchase at $10 each at the Carpenter Library, Jitters
Restaurant, the Pittsfield Town offices and at the Pittsfield
Historical Society headquarters on Tuesday mornings between 9 am
and noon or by calling Fuzz Freese at 603-435-7777.
Don’t leave 2015 without one.
