Northwood School Family Fun Night

The Northwood School Wellness Committee is offering its first family event by holding a Family Fun physical activity event with “Game Night” on Thursday, October 16. Fun movement games are planned for families to “get active” together. This event will be held in the Northwood School gym with children in grades K-2 and their families playing games from 6:00-7:00 and grades 3-5 from 7:15-8:15. Children should remember their gym sneakers and parents need to clean the bottoms of their sneakers to be free from all small stones and dirt, as this can damage the gym floor.

The Wellness Committee in the past several years has planned an event about once a month to help families work toward getting fit and eat healthier. We welcome new committee members and input from parents and other community members. If you are interested in joining our committee, our next meeting will be held on October 23 at 2:15 at the school. If you wish to submit ideas for events or have any suggestions on helping our children lead a healthier lifestyle, please email [email protected] with your ideas.

LETTER

Carol Shea Porter is completely correct when she says we can’t go backwards. The well of our economy, our foreign policy, our reputation, and our environment has been poisoned, and electing anyone over again who was complicit in espousing or supporting the policies of the current administration is insane. Definition: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

Why in the world would anyone think that bringing back Jeb Bradley would help solve the problems he helped to create? (For that matter, re-electing Sununu, choosing McBush, etc., is equally crazy.) I cannot for the life of me understand the logic behind this! Why should we give them one more chance?

We have poisoned the well for our children and grandchildren. Let’s at least elect people whose intentions are to get the poison out, rather than those whose platform is to dump more of the same into the well in the hopes that somehow that will clean it up. Let’s make sure that no one has the opportunity to dump more toxins into the life blood of our country.

I realize these are tough words, but these are tough times. Enough is enough!

Letter To The Editor

To the Editor,
This Sunday I had the pleasure of attending a celebration of the conservation of Mulligan Forest in Nottingham. It was a wonderful event to celebrate the collaborative effort that enabled the conservation of over 2,000 acres of forest for the benefit of our community in perpetuity. The land is a veritable community in itself supporting sportsmen, hikers, skiers, logging, habitat for many protected species and maybe most importantly, a major watershed from which so many New Hampshire residents get their drinking water.

In these hard economic times, people often consider money spent on conservation as a luxury, but I was reminded of just how untrue that is by the numerous benefits we all receive from this one property. From the jobs and business it supports to the recreation it provides and the natural resources it holds, Mulligan Forest is a vital community asset. The hard work of the many people who contributed to the effort at every level: local, state, and federal – public and private, is much appreciated for the value it adds to our lives.

One of the contributors to this effort was NH’s Land and Community Heritage Investment Program. As a State Representative for Candia, Deerfield, Northwood and Nottingham, I supported the efforts to find a permanent funding source for this important program, and I am so pleased that those funds are leveraged in projects that benefit everyone such as the conservation of Mulligan Forest.
Sincerely,

Representative Susi Nord
Rockingham County, District 1

Northwood Self Storage would like to thank all the supporters of our recent Northwood Lake Watershed Association Yard Sale. All the proceeds of our Yard Sales benefit the NLWA and its mission.

As usual, the vendors and all who participated had a great time and the opportunity to meet their neighbors and socialize. All for a worthy cause. Thanks again!

News from the Northwood School Board

The Northwood School Board meeting on Monday, October 6, began with a presentation by the first grade teaching team. Ellen Gibson, Dorothy Konrad, and Linda Kramas explained the Treasures Reading Program to the Board. The team explained the various aspects of the program and showed the Board examples of the materials that they use. All three teachers emphasized the importance of the “traveling teachers;” these special reading teachers move from grade to grade to help implement the small group work that is so important to the success of this new curriculum.

Principal Asbell presented the Board with the suggested changes to the honor roll system. In an effort to align with Coe-Brown, the Northwood School will now have three levels: High Honors (all A’s), Honors (all A’s and B’s), and Honorable Mention (A’s and B’s with no more than one C). Ms. Asbell also explained that the Recreation Department will be taking over the School Ski Program for this year. Kathy Boudreau, the Northwood Recreation Director, will have more information for parents and students within the next couple of weeks.

Colleen Pingree updated the Board on the recent Budget Committee meeting. She explained that the Budget Committee has scheduled a meeting for October 29, to review financial statements for the current school year. This information was not provided to the Committee but all members feel that it is important to look at the school’s current financial situation before Budget Season begins. This meeting will be held at 7:00pm in the Town Hall.

The Board also reviewed and revised various policies including: Internet Access, Coaching Recruitment, Team Parent, Coaching Job Description, Activity Fund, Line Item Adjustments, Staff Conflict of Interest, Nepotism, and Staff Hiring.

The Board’s next meeting will be on October 20. Nonpublic will begin at 6:30 p.m. and Public will begin at 7:00 p.m. For more information, please contact Colleen Pingree, Chair (942-5249 or [email protected]).

Final Meeting  - Yard Sale - Lake Clean - Up

The last regular meeting of the Northwood Lake Watershed Association 2008 season will be held on Saturday, October 18, 9 A.M. to 11A.M. at the Northwood Town Hall. This is the meeting where we plan for next year. Preliminary results from the summer milfoil treatment should be available.

The October 4 Yard Sale was a success, earning the Association enough funds for ten water testings.

The Yard Sale Committee gives special thanks to Frank Albert, Northwood Self-Storage for use of his facilities and expertise; and thanks, of course, to generous member donations.

The Northwood Lake Watershed Association is organizing a day of clean-up for the bottom of the lake at the Epsom end of the lake. Tornado debris will be removed and disposed of properly. The lake bottom will determine when we do the clean-up, after the lake drawdown. Tentatively, we are looking at the month window November 8 - December 8. Volunteers are needed. We are looking for volunteers to walk the lake bottom and clean up debris, volunteers with pick-up trucks to haul the debris away, and property owners at the Epsom end of the lake who could give us access to the lake. We are also looking for 2 ft. x4 ft. sections of 1/4" or 1/2" plywood to use in mucky sections of the lake to spread a person’s weight out. We will be dividing the volunteers into 8 teams, each with a coordinator with the knowledge about minimizing impact to the lake bottom and to verify that only man-made, fabricated material is being removed. If you would like to volunteer or donate to a temporary fund to pay for the disposal of the debris, it would be appreciated. You can reach us at: [email protected] or call Jim at 942-5365.

Remember the October 18 meeting at the Northwood Town Hall. The public is welcome, and we hope to see you there. www.northwoodlake.com
