Northwood Lake Water Quality Tested

On June 20, Alan Hand, retiring volunteer water tester for Northwood Lake, welcomed incoming volunteer water tester, Andrea Tomlinson, with a trip around the lake to review the sampling sites. The sites are primarily tributaries leading into Northwood Lake. Phosphorus and storm water runoff are key concerns. Water testing is done several times a year to monitor the lake. The samples were sent to the state lab for testing.

The Northwood Lake Watershed Association Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, July 19 at the Northwood Town Beach. Jeffrey Schloss, from the University of New Hampshire Extension Program, will be the guest speaker. His topic will be titled "How a Watershed Works" and will discuss the impact of your half acre on the lake water quality. Business will also be conducted including elections for Officers and several Director positions. The Northwood Lake Watershed Association is looking for people willing to commit to one of these roles. Hope to see you there.

Tiffany Allen Earns Dean's List Honors

Tiffany Allen, daughter of Ross & Sib Allen of Northwood, earned Dean's List status this Spring Semester at Emerson College in Boston with a grade point average of 3.85. Tiffany has completed her junior year as a candidate for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage Management and Production.

Many may remember our report of two years ago when Tiffany returned from Shih Hsin University in Taipei, Taiwan where she spent the Spring 2006 semester of her freshman year. We also reported that she would be going to Holland to study for the Spring 2007 semester. This adventure took her to Well, Netherlands where Emerson College owns a castle. Tiffany was appointed to one of two Resident Assistant (RA) positions while there. As an RA, she had to have a single room in the castle. From her bay window that opened out over the castle moat, she could watch a large fountain spraying high over the ducks, geese and swans that swam in and out of the gently falling water. (It was a tough job, but someone had to do it.)

Travel was a requirement of this semester in Holland, and travel she did. Two required five-day excursions took the students to London and to Prague. Other excursions allowed the students to pick their own destinations. Tiffany and her roommate (from Emerson) made a five-day trip to Barcelona, Spain.

This turned into more of an adventure when they found the express train that they were supposed to take back to the Netherlands was full. Undaunted, Tiffany sat down and worked out another schedule using regular trains. This took them considerably longer, but also took them on a tour through many of the major cities in several countries. Arriving back in the area of the castle late on a rainy night, the bus driver didn't charge them, and then instead of dropping them off at the bus stop, he drove this huge bus down the road to drop them off at the front gate of the castle. Additional trips took them to Amsterdam in Holland, the Greek Islands, Venice, and Rome, where they toured Vatican City, and where their hostel room looked out on the Parthenon.

Since returning home from Europe, Tiffany has held several professional stage management positions in theaters including the Yellow Taxi Company of Nashua, NH, and the Lyric Stage Company, and Bad Habit Productions, both in Boston. Her second stage management job with Yellow Taxi took her to San Francisco for a week. She is currently working as the stage and production manager at the Playwrights' Platform, a cooperative development theater for new plays.

Another honor Tiffany received this month is a scholarship from Stage Source, the Greater Boston Theater Alliance. She was one of five students to receive a scholarship for those who have shown exceptional character, scholarship, and dedication to theater arts. Congratulations, Tiffany, for a job well done.
