School Starts Soon!
Now is the time to think about enrolling your child in
preschool! The Center School in Northwood is accepting
registrations for the 2008-2009 school year. The Center
School, a parent cooperative preschool located next to the
town hall in Northwood, provides a developmental program for
three, four, and five year-olds. We have only a few openings
left in our two-day (T/Th) program and three-day (M/W/F)
morning programs. Act now before they are filled! To get

A Busy Watershed Association
The August Neighborhood Meeting of the Northwood Lake
Watershed Association was held at Camp Wah-Tut-Ca Boy Scout
Camp on August 9.
Andrea Tomlinson, Water Quality Director for the
Association, gave a presentation on “The Many Faces of Water
Quality”, stressing the lake’s problem with e.coli in
certain areas. Also, the scope of the many tributaries
leading into Northwood Lake. She and her team are testing
more frequently.
President Jim Vaillancourt spoke on the Watershed’s Five
Year Plan. Everything is on schedule, including the
treatment of the lake for milfoil this past June.
A cleanup of the Epsom portion of the Northwood Lake bottom
is scheduled for early November after the water has been
lowered. Volunteers are needed. Perhaps your scout, church
or school group will help.
The Watershed has openings available. Please contact us if
any of these volunteer positions interest you.
Treasurer (40 hours/year), Directors from Pine Point, Lake
Shore Drive, Lake Sites and Sleepy Hollow (30 hours/year),
Lake Host Co-Coordinator (25-35 hours/year), Desktop
Publisher for 2-3 newsletters per year (we provide content),
Lake Hosts (8+ hours/year), Neighborhood Host (June or
Sept.) (4 hours), Weed Watchers (3-8 hours/year).
Other Lake Associations in Northwood will be joining us for
a Yard Sale on October 4. We will pick up and store your

News From The Northwood School Board
The School Board has been working throughout the summer on a
number of different projects. We have revised and updated
the school Athletic Policies and are currently working on
revisions and updates of our Facility Use Policy (see the
school web site for more information). In addition to policy
changes, we have formed two new committees: The Facilities
Committee and the Communications Committee.
Facilities Committee members include School Board members
Janabeth Reitter & Dave Ruth, Assistant Principal Ken
Darsney, Athletic Director Rich Penney, Facilities Manager
Tom Sayers, and Superintendent Judy McGann. This Committee
will be working on long-range maintenance and improvement
plans for the building & grounds.
Communications Committee members include: School Board
members Colleen Pingree & Janabeth Reitter, Principal Esther
Asbell, Technology Director Steve Robert and community
members Ed LeDuke, Ellen Gibson, Dan Barnhart, Helen Ash,
Andrea Anatone, Cindy Decker, and Chris Andrews. This
committee is meeting biweekly and has begun work on a new
school web site (to be unveiled this fall) and is also
developing a broad plan for improved communications that
will include regular newspaper articles (like this one).
If you would like to volunteer to serve on either of these
committees, please contact the school board or a committee
member.
Other School News
The Northwood School will be welcoming several new employees
this year including Shelley St. Clair, our new school nurse,
Stacey Dearborn, our new food service manager, and Jillian
Cauthorne, our new part-time music teacher.
In preparation for the new school year, several important
improvements have been made to the building, including
repair of the front entry wall, the construction of a new
patio along the gym entrance walkway, and replacement of
lower playground fencing and surface material.
The School Board’s next meeting will be in the School
Library on August 25 at 6:30 pm. Our agenda will include a
review of estimated fuel increases for the upcoming year and
proposed revisions to Facilities Use and Hiring policies.

Harvey Lake Women’s Club
On September 2, 2008, the Harvey Lake Women’s Club will hold
their meeting at the Northwood Congregational Church’s
Fellowship Hall. The meeting will begin at 1p.m. with the
Annual Harvest Auction. The Greeter will be Marie Bapple
with Inspiration provided by Audrey Huckins. Refreshments
will be provided by Charlotte Klaubert and Brend Dunbar.
Harvey Lake Women’s Club
The Harvey Lake Women’s Club welcomes all women in the
greater Northwood area. We are a member of the General
Federation of Women’s Clubs of NH and the Greater Federation
of Women’s Clubs International. We meet at 1pm on the first
Tuesday of the month at the Northwood Congregational
Church’s parish hall.

Our purpose is to promote sociability and culture and to
make itself a power for good in the community.
Some of our activities include:

Co-host Rochester Visiting Nurses’ Association through the
Northwood Blood Pressure and Flu Shot Clinic.

We provide layettes for low income babies at Concord
Hospital.

Make comfort pillows for breast cancer patients.
-
Knit hats and mittens for St.Joseph’s Children’s Home in
Rochester.

Donate monthly to the Northwood Emergency Food Pantry.

Award scholarships to Northwood Coe-Brown Academy female
students.
-
Award a dictionary/thesaurus to an outstanding Northwood
Elementary School 8th grader each spring.

Donate books to the Chesley Memorial Library.

Host an annual Coe-Brown concert.
-
Provide a refreshment table at all town elections.

Obituaries
Reuben
Parker Prichard, Jr.
Reuben Parker Prichard, Jr., Captain, US Navy (retired), died on
August 7, 2008, at Arleigh Burke Pavilion in McLean, VA. He was
83 years old.
A native of Syracuse, New York, Reuben graduated from the U.S.
Naval Academy in 1947, and married the former Jeanie Moore of
Villisca, Iowa, the same year. Following a tour aboard the
escort carrier Siboney and flight training, he flew 120 missions
in the Korean conflict and became training officer in attack
aircraft for the Atlantic Fleet.
In 1955, Reuben graduated at the top of his class from the Naval
Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, with a B.S. degree in
aeronautical engineering. He earned an M.S. degree from
Princeton University in 1956, specializing in aircraft stability
and control. He received the Outstanding Student award when
graduating from the Navy Test Pilot School in 1960. Reuben won
many honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, a
meritorious service medal, eight air medals, two Navy
commendation medals, three Navy Unit commendations and thirteen
campaign medals.
In 1965, Reuben served as executive officer and a year later as
commanding officer of VT-26, an F-11 Tiger aircraft training
squadron. In 1968 he served as executive officer of the carrier
Ticonderoga in waters off Vietnam and Korea.
Reuben was a veteran of over 34 years as an aviator, with
several thousand hours of flight experience in more than 140
types of aircraft. He served 5 years during two tours at the
Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland, one tour as a
test pilot and program manager, and the second tour as Director
of the Navy Test Pilot School.
Following his retirement from the Navy in 1970, Reuben joined
NASA where he was Assistant Director of Safety for Aviation,
then Director of Safety and Environmental Health. In 1979,
Reuben joined the Department of Energy as Director of the Safety
Engineering and Analysis Division.
After retiring from civil service in 1983, Reuben founded and
directed R.P.X., Inc, an aviation safety consulting business.
Reuben’s life was deeply rooted in his Christian faith, and all
who knew him felt his love, respect, and caring. Reuben was a
longstanding member and an ordained elder of Lewinsville
Presbyterian Church in McLean, VA.
Reuben is survived by five children; Paige Kennedy of Scotsburn,
Nova Scotia; Polly Lehtonen of Columbia, MD; Reuben Prichard,
III, of Raleigh, NC; Priscilla Merrill of Northwood, NH, and
Richard Prichard of McLean, VA; six grand children; and one
great-grandchild.
His wife, Jeanie preceded him in death September, 2007.
