A Busy Watershed Association

The August Neighborhood Meeting of the Northwood Lake Watershed Association was held at Camp Wah-Tut-Ca Boy Scout Camp on August 9.

Andrea Tomlinson, Water Quality Director for the Association, gave a presentation on “The Many Faces of Water Quality”, stressing the lake’s problem with e.coli in certain areas. Also, the scope of the many tributaries leading into Northwood Lake. She and her team are testing more frequently.

President Jim Vaillancourt spoke on the Watershed’s Five Year Plan. Everything is on schedule, including the treatment of the lake for milfoil this past June.

A cleanup of the Epsom portion of the Northwood Lake bottom is scheduled for early November after the water has been lowered. Volunteers are needed. Perhaps your  scout, church or school group will help.

The Watershed has openings available. Please contact us if any of these volunteer positions interest you.

We have revised and updated the school Athletic Policies and are currently working on revisions and updates of our Facility Use Policy (see the school web site for more information). In addition to policy changes, we have formed two new committees: The Facilities Committee and the Communications Committee.

Facilities Committee members include School Board members Janabeth Reitter & Dave Ruth, Assistant Principal Ken Darsney, Athletic Director Rich Penney, Facilities Manager Tom Sayers, and Superintendent Judy McGann. This Committee will be working on long-range maintenance and improvement plans for the building & grounds.
Communications Committee members include: School Board members Colleen Pingree & Janabeth Reitter, Principal Esther Asbell, Technology Director Steve Robert and community members Ed LeDuke, Ellen Gibson, Dan Barnhart, Helen Ash, Andrea Anatone, Cindy Decker, and Chris Andrews. This committee is meeting biweekly and has begun work on a new school web site (to be unveiled this fall) and is also developing a broad plan for improved communications that will include regular newspaper articles (like this one).

If you would like to volunteer to serve on either of these committees, please contact the school board or a committee member.

Reuben Parker Prichard, Jr., Captain, US Navy (retired), died on August 7, 2008, at Arleigh Burke Pavilion in McLean, VA. He was 83 years old.

A native of Syracuse, New York, Reuben graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1947, and married the former Jeanie Moore of Villisca, Iowa, the same year. Following a tour aboard the escort carrier Siboney and flight training, he flew 120 missions in the Korean conflict and became training officer in attack aircraft for the Atlantic Fleet.

In 1955, Reuben graduated at the top of his class from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, with a B.S. degree in aeronautical engineering. He earned an M.S. degree from Princeton University in 1956, specializing in aircraft stability and control. He received the Outstanding Student award when graduating from the Navy Test Pilot School in 1960. Reuben won many honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, a meritorious service medal, eight air medals, two Navy commendation medals, three Navy Unit commendations and thirteen campaign medals.

In 1965, Reuben served as executive officer and a year later as commanding officer of VT-26, an F-11 Tiger aircraft training squadron. In 1968 he served as executive officer of the carrier Ticonderoga in waters off Vietnam and Korea.

He served 5 years during two tours at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland, one tour as a test pilot and program manager, and the second tour as Director of the Navy Test Pilot School.

Following his retirement from the Navy in 1970, Reuben joined NASA where he was Assistant Director of Safety for Aviation, then Director of Safety and Environmental Health. In 1979, Reuben joined the Department of Energy as Director of the Safety Engineering and Analysis Division.

After retiring from civil service in 1983, Reuben founded and directed R.P.X., Inc, an aviation safety consulting business.
