Dominica Update

Hello Everyone,
It’s been a long time since I last sent anything about my wanderings. The Judysadventure.com is temporarily unavailable.

I’ve been working in the school till beginning of July. I had no free time. Saturdays involved beach clean ups and religion class, Sundays were Church, visiting and sometimes beach clean ups. I have kids that love going to the beach play and are willing to work for ten or so minutes. Can’t find any adults yet! Weekdays included one day in town to gather necessities and go to the Peace Corps office, one day of Farm school, two days of primary school and another day to do community work.

Began painting the school library and have one wall to sponge. Photos of three girls helping are attached. I’m having a summer reading program and garden time for the month of August, one day a week.

A neighbor is building a canoe out of a tree. This is how boats were made years ago. They are heavy!

We started working on the disaster shelter two weeks ago. We have four months to complete it. I’ll be working one day a week.

I’ve been bringing people to Wavine Cyrique, Secret Beach, Rosalie Beach to visit and see turtles.

The FRAYAL sign was painted to add to our road. A neighbor will be nailing to a coconut tree.

I went home mid July for a few days for a nephew’s wedding and to see my new granddaughter. I played two days with my 3 year old grandson, Max. We had so much fun. I had to sneak away while he took a nap. Friends hosted a pizza party. Just like old times...they said “It’s as if I never left”! Saw the old homestead, garden, neighbors...very nice. It’s chilly here! I missed the Dominican warmth. I gathered 100# of craft supplies and organic grains to bring back. Reebok gave me dozens of shoes to distribute. If only I could carry more!

The wedding was a great opportunity to see my family. Hugs and tears but happy to see me, and I them. Everyone is doing well.

Rob came back with me for a week. I gave him a non-stop tour of all our local waterfalls, rivers and beaches. He put photos on Facebook.

I’m healing my foot from a pricker that infected my big toe. I wouldn’t stop hiking or sit till Rob got on the plane. Now I’m grounded in the house for a few days but have so much inside work to do that’s it’s actually good.

Always glad to hear from you. Have more photos but Hotmail only lets you send 10MB. God bless you all. Love and prayers, Judy

The Obedient Christian (Part 1)

By Pastor Ted White
I don’t have to obey! I don’t have to prove myself to anyone! Nobody is going to tell me what to do! I’m the captain of my own ship, the controller of my own life! Too many times this seems to be the attitude among those who call themselves Christians. But, what does the Lord Jesus have to say about this?

In John chapter 15 and verse 14 we are told “You  are My friends if you do whatever I command you.” Those who are truly the friends of Jesus seek to keep His Word. There is an implication here as well. Those who do not seek to keep His Word are not His friends. The short Book of I John in chapter 5 and verses 2-3 tells us that “By this we know  that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.” First of all, to love God is to obey Him. Secondly, to show we really love the children of God (those who have been born again, saved, forgiven, etc.) is to love God which includes being obedient to Him.

If a person is truly a Christian and all that that means, they cannot be obedient to God when they knowingly are disobeying His Word, the Bible. People can claim all they want that the Bible is not God’s Word, but that is just a smokescreen seeking to excuse self from obeying what it says.

When the Apostle Paul was speaking on Mars Hill to some elite he said in Acts 17:30-31 that “…Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the man who He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” Those words, “commands all men everywhere to repent” are not optional words. People can disregard them, but there will be consequences for not repenting, that is, for not turning from one’s own way to follow God’s way through His Son, Jesus Christ. People can reject this, but after death, it will be too late to find out they were wrong. Destiny is sealed by our decision to reject Jesus or accept who He is, proved by a changed life. What is your attitude? Do you say “I’m the captain of my own life” or have you submitted to the Captain of all men, Jesus? Jesus came to set us free; to give us healthy life, but you must come on His terms. To find His terms go to www.newhopenorthwood.com or call 942-7729 or to find peace with God http://www.billygraham.org/SH_StepsToPeace.asp or http://www.simplysharejesus.com/

Northwood School Board News

On Tuesday, August 18th at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym, there will be a Special School District Meeting to vote on the Proposed Teacher Contract for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year. As you recall, the contract that the School Board put forward at the School District Meeting in March was voted down. The new proposal is outlined below.

1. Teachers will receive one of the two increases below depending on their status:

A. Teachers will receive a step increase as specified in the contract. The average step increase is 3.5% resulting in a budget increase of $37, 438.

B. Teachers who are no longer eligible for a step increase will receive a one time increase of $1000. This is an average increase of 1.9% per teacher resulting in a budget increase of $25,324.

2. Long Term Disability Coverage: $6,164.00

3. Club Stipend Increase: $2,725 (This increase is based on an hourly rate not to exceed $25 and will allow for additional school clubs.)

4. Athletic Stipends: $1,267 (This increase was based on a comparison to like positions within SAU 44. These stipends will no longer increase annually as they have in the past.)

5. Workshops: $4,500 (This increase allows teachers an increase of $100 for tuition.)
This contract will result in a total budget increase of $77,418. This increase represents an increase of .653% over the total school budget. To see how the proposed contract will affect your taxes, please refer to the tax impact chart posted on the School Board section of the web site.

As with the School District Meeting in March, only the registered Northwood voters in attendance will vote on this contract. The School Board feels that this is a very reasonable proposal. However, this contract cannot be passed without your support at the meeting on August 18th.

Again, the meeting is Tuesday, August 18th at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym.

Please come and support the Northwood School. Babysitting and refreshments will be provided.
