Letter
Upon their return home from Afghanistan for a two week R&R, Sgt. Joe
Costanzo and Spc. Travis Chase were overwhelmed by the outpouring of
support and thanks given by the townspeople and businesses of
Northwood and Epsom.
Thanks to Kraig Emery of Northwood -
everywhere the Soldiers looked was a sign welcoming them home and
thanking the two for their service.
The two young men have not
been home since January 2 and Kraig wished to show these soldiers
and all the troops how much their sacrifice is appreciated so he
approached many businesses along Route 4 in both Northwood and Epsom.
Although the soldiers have returned to Afghanistan, there was no
doubt in their minds they are supported and not forgotten. The
172 Mountain Infantry “Charlie Company” are expected home this
December and we hope many more towns welcome these soldiers home and
thank them for their service.
God Bless America The Costanzo &
Chase families

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Athena Club Working To Combat Domestic
Violence
October was Domestic Violence Awareness month. Statistics show
that in the United States, a woman is raped every six minutes and is
battered every 15 seconds (Broken Bodies, Shattered Minds: Torture
and Ill Treatment of Women, Amnesty International, 2001.) No
age level is immune from the potential of violence. The Bureau
of Justice states that ONE in THREE high school students have been
or will be involved in an abusive relationship. These figures
are sadly true and violence exists in every section of our society.
High school girls at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy are doing their
part to spread awareness and make a difference to those working to
combat this violence. Members of the Athena Club, a leadership
group for tenth grade girls, recently volunteered their time to do
physical work at the administrative offices of “A Safe Place” in
Portsmouth, NH. “A Safe Place” was founded in 1978 to prevent
and eliminate domestic abuse by providing crisis intervention,
support services, education and advocacy to survivors, their
families and the community. All services are free. The
Coe-Brown girls were thrilled to have the opportunity to donate
their time to such a worthy cause. In addition to their
volunteer time, the Athena Club wore ribbons, posted signs and
participated in a self-defense seminar led by RAD (Rape Aggression
Defense) Officer Diana Scott. For more information about
“A Safe Place”, contact Karen Toube, Community Services Advocate, at
603-890-6392. The hotline number for those seeking help is
1-800-854-3552.

Coe-Brown Youth 2 Youth Participates In The “Plant The Promise
Campaign”
The Coe-Brown Youth 2 Youth group is a youth
empowerment group focused on raising awareness about the risks of
drug and alcohol use. Since the last week in October is Red Ribbon
Week, which is the largest drug prevention program in the nation,
the group engaged in week long events that included numerous alcohol
and drug awareness events. Among these events was “Plant the
Promise” campaign which involved the group planting 200 red tulip
bulbs in front of Coe-Brown that will bloom in the spring in the
shape of a red ribbon. Each year, thousands of tulip bulbs are
planted around the country in honor of Red Ribbon Week. Youth 2
Youth was lucky enough to receive these Free tulip bulbs from the
state of New Hampshire for the purpose of hosting a “Plant The
Promise” event.
Other awareness events hosted by Coe-Brown Youth
2 Youth included an impact wall where students will understand the
devastating effect that drinking and driving has had on youth. Youth
2 Youth placed 700 paper cars on the wall of the Gerrish Gym. One
hundred and ninety-six of these cars were black indicating the
statistic that 28% of 15-20 year-old drivers who were killed in
motor vehicle crashes in 2005 had been drinking (National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration). The group is using 700 cars because
it is roughly the number of students who attend Coe-Brown, in hopes
that it will have more of an impact for students. The group also
handed out educational information and free giveaways to students
about drug prevention, red ribbons, and encouraged participation in
a “wear red day” to increase awareness about the negative
consequences of substance abuse on our youth.
Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Alumni Association
The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Alumni Association is pleased to
announce a new fund raising effort that will benefit both the
Association’s Scholarship and Operating funds and the Academy’s
Annual Campaign. The Alumni Association, in conjunction with Piece
Time Puzzles of Northwood, has developed two puzzles featuring
images of the Academy—one historic and one present day. The puzzles
will make their debut at the Academy’s 8th Annual Holiday Craft
Fair, scheduled for Saturday, November 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in
the Gerrish Gym.
The Alumni Association believes the puzzles will
be popular with both Coe-Brown Northwood Academy alumni and the
general public. One of the puzzles features the iconic Pinkham Hall,
circa 1887, while the other is an aerial shot of the current campus.
These puzzles make great gifts and collectors’ items, and the
proceeds from the sales benefit a worthwhile cause.
The Alumni
Association worked with Haley Stevens of Piece Time Puzzles to
produce the finished products. A 2004 graduate of Coe-Brown, Ms.
Stevens’ family has owned and operated Piece Time Puzzles for the
past 14 years. The puzzles come beautifully packaged with a brief
history of the Academy on the back of the box.
The puzzles will
sell for $20 each or $35 for a set—one each of the two different
puzzles. Supplies are limited (only 100 of each version were
produced) so the Alumni Association urges people to act quickly. For
those who can’t make it to the craft fair on November 6, the Alumni
Association will also be selling the puzzles at the Annual Alumni
Basketball Game on December 22—if there are any left!
For more
information about the puzzle fund raiser and the Coe-Brown Northwood
Academy Alumni Association, visit the Association’s page on the
school’s web site at
www.coebrown.org, or call the Academy at 603-942-5531.
