The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy ChorusToPerform “Celebrate America” On NHPTV

Tim Janis, well known for his “Music with a Mission” has worked on many philanthropic projects with artists such as Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Andre Previn, and The New York Philharmonic. He has also produced fund raising programs for PBS with George Clooney and James Earl Jones.

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, along with high school choirs from across New Hampshire will perform with Tim Janis and his ensemble in a new special called Celebrate America, created by Janis to spotlight our nation’s youth and pull communities together in a celebration of music that uplifts and inspires.

Celebrate America, which airs on Friday, March 5th at 10:30pm, was taped at NHPTV in early October, 2009.  Busses rolled in from across the state, pulling together 500 students from New Hampshire high school music programs.  Arriving well prepared and very professional, each choir was brought into the station to record their performance for the broadcast.

The Coe-Brown Northwood Academy students did an exceptional job singing “Danny Boy.” Student Michael Dodge said, “It was an honor to be selected out of so many choruses. I have never been on television it is cool to see how it all works.” Another student Jacob Brownell said, “It was a privilege to work with arranger Tim Janis. It is great to come to NHPTV for we all grew up watching PBS.” Student Jessica Goudreault said, “I hope they can grasp the emotion of the song and what it was trying to convey.”

Not only does Celebrate America give our youth a life-changing opportunity, but it also teaches children the importance of contributing to community through the arts, as Celebrate America is also a fund raising event during Public Television’s annual pledge drives.

The following schools participated in Celebrate America at the NHPTV station:
Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, Winnacunnet High School, Bow High School, Pinkerton High School, Nashua High School North, Londonderry High School, Keene High School, Concord High School, Nashua High School South, Manchester West High School, Hollis-Brookline High School, Dover High School, Manchester High School, and Portsmouth High School

NHPTV really put a lot of effort into creating this special.  It takes a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ effort to bring this great opportunity for students together.   I believe the fabric of our nation is the strength found in our local communities.  We need to stay connected and committed with a spirit of serving one another to the best of our abilities.” Janis said.

Richard Dean Linnell

Richard Dean Linnell died on February 5, 2010, at Havenwood-Heritage Heights, in Concord, NH.  He was 89.  Dick was born in Mancelona, Michigan on September 18, 1920, to Earl Dean and Constance Hartley Linnell, the first of 4 children.  He received his early schooling in Cadillac, Michigan, moving to South Royalton, Vt. in 1935, and then to Northwood, NH, the following year. In 1938, he graduated from Coe Brown Academy. He attended The University of NH until 1941 when he enlisted in the Air Corps to follow a career in his lifelong passion of aviation.  After receiving training as a fighter plane pilot he was assigned to the 92nd Fighter Squadron, 81st Fighter Group, piloting P39s. He was later assigned to the Pacific Theater and served in New Guinea. He then elected to serve a second tour of duty in China, serving in the Pacific Theater until Dec. 1945.  Dick received many decorations while becoming a major and squadron commander in the Chinese theater.  Following World War II, he returned to the University of NH, where he completed his bachelor of science in Electrical Engineering. Several years later he was awarded both Masters and Doctorate degrees from MIT in Aeronautical Engineering.

Dick specialized in Hypersonic Airflow.  His many years of dedication to the scientific field included work at United Aircraft, MIT Weapons Contract Group, General Electric ICBM Division, Convair Research Lab in San Diego, and he held a Chair at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Dick published many Scientific Papers as well as a book on Hypersonic Airflow. He was an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Before moving back to New Hampshire, to care for his aging mother, Dick worked for the Office of Naval Research in Washington in the Pentagon.

One of Dick’s greatest passions was growing things and he encouraged others to grow new and unusual plants and shrubs.  His extensive work in genealogy left his family with a unique pictorial record of their heritage. Along with the history of his family he recorded a detailed account of his years of service in the Pacific theater.

He is survived by a son, Bruce Linnell, of Richmond, Va., a sister, Connie Ambrose-Gates of Northwood, a brother and his wife, Eric and Joan Linnell, of Blue Hill, Me., and a number of very close nieces and nephews.  His wife, Charlene, and a brother, Bob Linnell of Lebanon, NH, predeceased him.  A memorial service was held in the chapel at Havenwood on Feb 14.
