Chesley
Memorial Library To Hold Book Signing
The Chesley Memorial
Library will host a book signing for “Our Written Voices” on
Saturday, May 15, at 2:00 p.m. Susan R. Edgerton created “The
Written Voice” on CafeMom in May of 2008. “The Written Voice” is a
featured writing group on the popular website for mothers, CafeMom,
www.cafemom.com. Established in
May of 2008, “The Written Voice” welcomed writers and readers alike
and is comprised of passionate, talented, and supportive women.
In late September of 2009, it was decided to publish a book of the
group members’ original works (poems and short stories). During this
time, the members all worked diligently to polish their work and get
it ready for publication. They decided that donating the proceeds
from the sale of their book to a charity would be a wonderful idea
so they nominated different charities, giving reasons why the
charity they chose would be best suited. They derived a poll and
everyone voted. The non-profit organization entered by Paula G.
Rockwell, David’s House, received the most votes, and thus became
their chosen charity. Much the same way the charity was chosen, (by
nominations and voting) the name “Our Written Voices” became the
title of their book.
Paula G. Rockwell will be representing the
group as a co-author at the book signing. A representative
from David’s House (located in Lebanon, New Hampshire) will also be
at the book signing as a promotion for families in the area that may
one day need their services. The person representing David’s House
is Jaye Olmstead, who works specifically with fundraising events.
The profits obtained from the sale of “Our Written Voices” will be
used to support David’s House, a non-profit organization that helps
house families with critically ill patients in the hospital. They
are thankful that the library is very involved with the community
and always helps to promote local authors.

Northwood Area Land Management Collaborative
Hires
New Outreach Coordinator
The Steering Committee of the Northwood Area Land Management
Collaborative (NALMC) announced recently that it has hired a new
Outreach Coordinator. Julie Klett, an experienced communications and
outreach professional, joined the Collaborative in April. The
part-time position has been funded by a generous grant from the New
Hampshire Charitable Foundation.
Julie Klett is a naturalist with
a strong background in natural science, natural history and
conservation biology. She has more than 15 years of professional
experience in media and public outreach in the non-profit and
commercial arenas.
“We are fortunate to have found someone with
Julie’s experience and professional connections. She will really
help us spread the word about NALMC,” said Carl Wallman, NALMC
Chairman. “Her primary responsibilities will be to reach out to and
communicate with area landowners to inform them of our projects and
encourage their participation. Our slogan, ‘working together across
our stone walls,’ expresses our core values and we look forward to
working with Julie to accomplish them.”
“NALMC is a dynamic and
passionate group dedicated to increasing landowner awareness of the
Northwood area’s natural resources,” said Klett. “I believe in what
they are doing and can’t wait to help them make a meaningful and
lasting impact in our own backyards.”
Klett will continue and
expand on the outreach work begun in 2009 which is based on a
comprehensive Ecological Assessment of the Northwood area. The
Assessment provides an overview of the ecology, culture, and
recreation within the NALMC focus area, including: natural resources
and historic sites, recreation areas, watersheds, wildlife habitat
and more. It also provides guidelines for action.
“The
Ecological Assessment is a key starting point to become more
familiar with the NALMC neighborhood,” said Klett. “Everyone can
benefit from a common understanding of the wildlife, woodlands,
waters, and other features of our local landscape.”
Klett’s
education includes a Bachelors of English and a Bachelor of Fine
Arts from the University of New Hampshire, as well as coursework in
conservation biology, natural history (including wildflower
identification, invasive plant identification, and vernal pool
ecology), web development and social media marketing. She volunteers
for the Pittsfield Conservation Commission and the New Hampshire
Children in Nature Coalition, and is a member of the New Hampshire
Center for Non-Profits, New Hampshire Audubon, and the New Hampshire
Orchid Society.
The NALMC neighborhood encompasses 4,000 acres
of unfragmented public and private lands, the headwaters of the
Lamprey River and is a watershed divide between the Lamprey River
and the Merrimack River This unique public/private partnership
includes: the N.H. Fish & Game Department; the N.H. Department of
Resources & Economic Development; the town of Northwood; Coe-Brown
Academy; the University of New Hampshire; as well as approximately
25 private landowners.
