Emergency Action Watershed Meeting
Let’s work together to save our lake from invasive milfoil! Please
come to an emergency action meeting of the Northwood Lake Watershed
Association at the Northwood Town Hall, Saturday, June 12, 9-10:30
a.m.
Find out the hard facts about the milfoil problem in Northwood Lake.
Learn how milfoil adversely affects property values and your quality
of life.
Discuss what other lakeshore communities have done to successfully
combat milfoil. Find out what you can do to help.
Since 1992 we have treated the lake for milfoil. Until recently, we
thought we had things under control. We were wrong. Milfoil has been
making steady gains over the last few years. It has become denser in
the areas where originally found and has spread to new areas around
the lake.
We
must act. We have asked the state for a permit to treat the worst 41
acres of our 650 acre lake this June. The State has no money this
year to help us so we are on our own.
There is hope! Our plan is to hit the milfoil hard with treatments
for two consecutive seasons. We then plan to follow that up with an
ongoing diving maintenance program 4 to 5 times a year. We are
organizing our own dive team to help keep costs low and maintain
control of milfoil treatment ourselves.
This problem can only be solved by all of us working together. Your
attendance at the June 12 meeting is important.
Bryant Library Open To Public In July And August In
Northwood
The
Northwood Historical Society Bryant Library on School Street in
Northwood will be open each Saturday starting July 3rd through
August 28 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Come visit the displays and “see”
the history of our town.
This year, the Society has created a scavenger hunt and the blank
forms can be acquired at the library and a certificate will be
awarded to any child who has it correct. Historic sites all through
town are marked and a brief description of the history is provided.
It could be a fun couple of hours activity.

and I am running for President of the CBNA Alumni Association. I
believe this organization has much potential, and I ask for your
support. Together we can bring about marked change by increasing
membership, initiating new fundraising events, becoming a strong
asset to CBNA in its endeavors, and having more visibility in the
community as a welcoming support system for alumni and current
students.
The
Annual Association Meeting is Saturday, June 12 at Coe-Brown
Northwood Academy. While the deadline has passed to rsvp for the
banquet, I urge all members to attend the meeting which follows the
6 P.M. dinner. Please cast your vote for me as President. Please
vote against the proposed by-law changes, which restrict active
participation in the association.

you are not currently a member, please join now! New members can pay
their $5 dues for the 2009-2010 year up to and at this meeting.

Christian Leaders (Part 4) Biblical Leadership’s Foundation
Comes From Servanthood By Pastor Ted White
What is your
concept of Biblical leadership? Is it with an iron fist? Does it
leave room for input from others? Is it transparent? Is it
approachable? There are some leaders who think they are always right
and it is their way or the highway. What was Jesus’ concept of
Biblical leadership? Let’s take a look.
In Mark 10:42-45 “Jesus
called them together and said, You know that those who are regarded
as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high
officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead,
whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and
whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of
Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as
a ransom for many.”
Unsaved rulers have the tendency to exercise
their authority over people. They use their positions to flex their
power and have the people serve them instead of serving the people.
Jesus said this was not to be the case of His followers. Those who
are His leaders need to have a servant’s heart. Biblical leaders
need to be willing to serve all people and not just the ones they
are comfortable with. This does not mean they agree with everyone.
There are leaders that appear to be great in man’s sight, but it is
what God thinks about them that ultimately counts. People have the
tendency to look at the outward appearance, but God goes straight to
the core of the person. He sees what a person really is no matter
how wonderful they can appear on the outside. How many times do
people look at appearance, the eloquent speech, the nice things
people do etc. But only God truly knows the motivation of the heart.
He knows what the thoughts of any person are.
Jesus is not only
our Lord and Savior, but He surely is our example as well. He who is
over all men came to serve even the least among men. He who created
everything that is good, allowed that creation to kill Him. That was
the greatest service ever to take place in all creation. Then He
rose from the grave. May those of us who are Biblical leaders follow
His example. Yea, may all of us who claim to follow Him look to His
example of servanthood. May we actively be serving others in Jesus
Name, in His authority! This is greatness to God!

Obituaries
Leighton (Skip) O. Allen
Leighton O. (Skip) Allen of Northwood
went Home to be with the Lord Wednesday evening, May 5, 2010.
He was under the care of the Hyder Hospice Family Home in Dover, NH.
He was 75.
Skip was born on December 9, 1934, in Rochester, NH,
the son of Leighton O. Allen and Muriel B. (Shea) Allen.
He moved
to Northwood in 1947 when his father built a house on Route 202A
that became the Allen Farm. Upon graduating from Dover High School
in 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, and served primarily in
Great Britain. After his military service, he spent most of
his working years as a computer specialist, becoming one the top
field engineers on IBM mainframes in the country. At one time
or another, Skip worked for most of the major computer manufacturers
including IBM, Honeywell, and Wang.
Skip loved York Beach,
and retiring from the computer world, he opened a hot dog and
hamburger stand at Short Sands. After the summer season, he returned
to Northwood to become a real estate agent and notary public. In
August of 1990, he opened the Allen Farm Lock Shop in the home he
had built on the original farm land (Allen Farm Road).
Skip
continued to utilize his electronics expertise in the repair of old
radios, amplifiers and other electronic equipment. He also pursued
other areas of interest such as bee keeping, photography, and making
maple syrup in the sugar shack that he and his neighbor, Phil, and
brother, Ross had built on the original farmstead. In 2003, he built
a new home on Old Mountain Road.
Skip is survived by his wife of
20 years, Normalee Allen; brother, Don (and wife, Merry) Allen, of
Maine; brother Ross (and wife, Sib) Allen, of Northwood; four
children, Paul Allen and Debbie Grzeck, both of Virginia, and Mark
Allen and Tracey Berry, both of Connecticut; and six grandchildren,
Megan and Mandy Allen, Kelly and Kyle Grzeck, and Ken and Michelle
Berry.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 17 at
the First Baptist Church of Northwood where Skip and Normalee have
been members for twenty years.
