Northwood School Open House And Community Information Night

The Northwood School will hold its Annual Open House on Tuesday, September 21 (K-4) and Wednesday, September 22 (5-8) and we would like you to participate!

This year, in addition to classroom visits, our gymnasium will be filled with representatives from an array of school and community organizations. Our goal is to provide parents with information about everything from recreation events to the annual school district meeting. The annual open house has always been a very well-attended event so this is a great opportunity to disseminate information to a large group (with a current enrollment of 437 students, we expect to see close to 1000 adults over the course of the two evenings).

To reserve a table(s), please call the Northwood School at 942-5488 by Friday, September 17.

For more information about the event, contact any Northwood School Communications Committee member (Ellen Gibson, Dan Barnhart, Kathy Thom, Jen O’Dwyer, Andrea Anatone, Colleen Pingree, Steve Robert, Rich Hartford).

DAR Reception

Regent Jan Gilman and Treasurer General Sarah Potts Voll of the Else Cilley Chapter NSDAR smile for the camera during a recent reception for Mrs. Voll at the Nottingham Square Schoolhouse. Members of the Else Cilley Chapter held an Open House for the newly elected National officer so member of the Daughters of the American Revolution could congratulate her. Daughters from around the state, as well as the society’s purposes to promote education, patriotism and historical preservation. Women interested in joining DAR may visit the chapter’s web site” www.freewebs.com/elsecilley.

The Else Cilley Chapter, NSDAR, recently held a reception for member Sarah Potts Voll congratulating her on her recent election to the National office of Treasurer General. Mrs. Voll attended the reception with her husband, John and daughter, Layla.
Following the opening ritual with the President General’s message read by Vice-regent Barbara Frangione, the National Defense Message given by John Voll, stating the importance of literacy to our national defense, and a blessing by Chaplain Becky Shoup, guests were invited to enjoy the fruit, cheese, crackers, wine and punch provided by the chapter members. All attending enjoyed a pleasant afternoon of socializing and took home favors of gold covered chocolate coins from a treasure chest decorated with gold and candy necklaces.

Be sure to mark your calendars and come out to Nottingham Day Celebrations at the Nottingham Elementary School off Route 152. The Else Cilley Chapter will participate in Nottingham Day on Saturday, September 18, 2010. The chapter plans a table with a patriotic coloring activity for children and information about the flag, DAR and genealogical research for the adults. Genealogist Sue Farnum will be on hand to assist women interested in tracing their family roots. Prospective member packets will also be available. The chapter will have several raffle items including hand-decorated sweatshirts, gift baskets and gift cards. All proceeds go towards repairs and upkeep to the chapter’s historic building, the Nottingham Square Schoolhouse.

NSDAR Else Cilley Chapter Regent and NH State Chairman of the DAR American History Committee, Jan Gilman, has begun her campaign to encourage students in Grades 5-8 to participate in the organization’s yearly essay contest.

NH schoolteachers should receive information about this year’s topic, Memoirs From Paul Revere, from a local DAR chapter soon. As 2010 is the 275th anniversary of the birth of Paul Revere, students are asked to pretend they are Paul Revere writing his memoirs. They should relate various accomplishments for which Paul would wish to be remembered in the annals of American history.

If you are a teacher or a home-schooler who would like information about the contest, you may contact Mrs. Gilman directly at [email protected]. This contest is one of the many ways the Daughters of the American Revolution work to promote Education, foster Patriotism and preserve History. Women interested in joining the DAR may visit the chapter web site at www.freewebs.com/elsecilley.

The chapter will hold its October meeting at the Wild Orchard Guest Farm and Cordwainer Shop, 67 Candia Road, Deerfield, NH, on Saturday, October 9 (please note change of date), beginning at 1:30 p.m. The public is welcome. Members may meet at the Schoolhouse at 1 p.m. and carpool to the farm.

NALMC And The Deerfield Conservation Commission To Present Special Screening  Of DIRT! The Movie

Please join NALMC and the Deerfield Conservation Commission on September 23rd for a special screening of DIRT! The Movie. Come and meet neighbors and local conservation commission members. Learn about the importance of soils to the health and well being of our lands, and to all of us.

Thursday September 23, 2010, 7:00-9:30 p.m. at Camp Yavneh, 18 Lucas Pond Road (off Route 43) in Northwood.

Our Discussion Leader: Dr. Serita Frey, UNH Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences, Chair of the Deerfield Conservation Commission, and NALMC Steering Committee member.  Dr. Frey is a soil scientist whose research focuses on the response of soils to climate change.

DIRT! The Movie takes you inside the wonders of the soil. It tells the story of Earth’s most valuable and underappreciated source of fertility, from its miraculous beginning to its crippling degradation. Made from the same elements as the stars, plants and animals, and us, “dirt is very much alive.” Though, in modern industrial pursuits and clamor for both profit and natural resources, our human connection to and respect for soil has been disrupted. “Drought, climate change, even war are all directly related to the way we are treating dirt.”

DIRT! the Movie brings to life the environmental, economic, social and political impact that the soil has. It shares the stories of experts from all over the world who study and are able to harness the beauty and power of a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with soil. The movie teaches us: “When humans arrived 2 million years ago, everything changed for dirt. And from that moment on, the fate of dirt and humans has been intimately linked.”

In true NALMC fashion, Dirt! The Movie’s website states:

“The only remedy for disconnecting people from the natural world is connecting them to it again.”

For more information about this event or NALMC activities, please contact NALMC at 603-435-5209, email to [email protected] or visit www.nalmc.net.
