It’s interesting that a school district such as ours
will spend more than $3 million on special needs students, going
over budget $528,000 but not an extra dime on gifted and talented
ones. So, a student who has a shot at curing cancer or developing an
alternative energy source is pretty much on their own unless the
parents have money. It is entirely possible that we could buy every
student at Northwood school a new laptop computer for less money
than the cost for one year of one residentially placed student who
will never ever have a job. I wonder why every time I need technical
assistance I have to talk to a person who I can hardly understand
for help. Now that half of you are mad at me, let’s go for the rest
of you.
Special needs student’s parents (via laws and hard
work) are the best, the most ardent advocates for their kids in the
world. Good for them. Regular education students parents by and
large are the laziest and most ineffective advocates for their
children alive. Chickens do a better job. I wonder why nobody likes
me.
So, my question to you, are special education costs,
in part, robbing Northwood regular education students of an adequate
education and if so why? What’s to be done? The answer is undeniably
yes. And the other answer is of course money, lots and lots more
money!
Margaret Thatcher said "the problem with socialism
is that eventually you run out of other people’s money". That, in a
nutshell, is the gist of the problem. How, without hurting special
needs students and without copious amounts of new taxation that is
just not there, do we solve this dilemma? I intend to write two or
three more letters addressing Special Education and this issue
hoping that the Sun will continue printing them.

Teddy Bears For Joy
For my senior project, I am collecting Teddy Bears
to donate to children that are in the Children’s Hospital in Boston.
The collection period is for the whole month of November, and into
the first week of December.
Please donate your new or gently used Teddy Bears to
spread the holiday cheer. The bins where the bears will be collected
are located at the Northwood Town Hall, the Hannaford’s in
Northwood, in the lobbies of Coe Brown and the Northwood Elementary
School, and other area businesses. If you have any questions feel
free to contact me at (603)-942-8984.
Thank you for spreading the holiday cheer.

We would like to announce that a "Witham Family
Fund" has been set up at the Northwood TD Bank to aid a Northwood
family that is going through some very trying times.
Kenny Witham entered the hospital to have a
operation to remove a treated cancerous tumor and subsequently
suffered some severe complications. Any one who would like to help
this family can make direct donations to that fund at any TD Bank.
Kenny is truly a Northwood resident that has served
on the Board of Selectmen, is presently a member of the School Board
and has coached our children many times. You will, in the very near
future, see other ways that you can help. There will be raffles on
items, donation bottles etc. We would like to thank you for any help
you can be from the bottom of our hearts.
