Dead of Winter Story Swap Just for Fun

Come one and all to the third annual Dead of Winter Story Swap at Chadbourn’s Restaurant, Route 4, Northwood, Saturday, January 15, at 6:00 pm.  Order a tasty meal, then sit back, chow down and listen to Bob Chadbourn and Becky Rule tell a few lies in the Yankee humor vein.

Inspired diners are invited to join in with stories (or poems or songs) of their own.  One story leads to another in the oral tradition. This is an evening for laughter, neighborliness, tall tales and true stories, too.  The tables tend to fill fast so reservations are advised.  Call Sally at 942-5992.

I am celebrating joining my husband in what we hope will be an active retirement filled with both new adventures and continuing community involvement.  One of the many initiatives of the Democrats that will ease the burden of trying to live in retirement as middle-class Americans is the changes to Medicare that are part of the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010.

Too many of my age-mates were led to believe that these changes were bad for us.  What a shame that, despite efforts by organizations like AARP to get the correct information to them, they ended up voting for those who want to repeal this landmark legislation.  There is much in this law to help us, and also our children and grandchildren.  I am very concerned about future generations, and this law not only helps provide healthcare for them, it also will cut the deficit over the coming decades and provide tax breaks for small businesses.

One piece of this legislation that will be of great help was a project of my now former Congresswoman, Carol Shea Porter, one of the best legislators I have ever known: the fix for the so-called donut-hole in Medicare D.  I will miss Carol’s principled and constant concern for the rest of us who are not wealthy or connected to the powerful.  No one worked harder for us than Carol.

Now our new congressman, Frank Guinta, is poised to vote to repeal this law.  I assume, since I have not heard otherwise, that he will take his government-sponsored healthcare while repealing ours.  Since he has told us that he stands on principle about not revealing the source of the money that mysteriously appeared in his campaign account, is he standing on principle with healthcare as well?

Thank You!

The members of Northwood Fire-Rescue would like to take this opportunity to thank the citizens and merchants of Northwood for helping to make this year’s Northwood Santa’s Helpers an overwhelming success. Due to your tremendous response, we were able to wrap gifts of toys and clothing for 56 Northwood children.

While we are not able to provide a personal thank you to each and everyone providing assistance this year, we would like to note Northwood Human Services Director Sue Holden for her invaluable coordinating assistance.  Our thanks are also extended to Liz Helton for making Northwood Santa’s Helpers her senior portfolio project.

We appreciate your continued support of this neighbor helping neighbor program that brightens the lives of so many Northwood children. Your gifts not only provide enjoyment at Christmas, but will also continue throughout the year.

On behalf of the families you assisted and our members we wish you a safe, healthy and happy New Year.

Anytime Fitness
Launches “Feel Like A Million” Campaign

In celebration of its 1,000,000th member, Anytime Fitness will be giving away $1,000,000 in 2011.  Daily contests hosted on AnytimeHealth.com—with prizes of up to $1000—and a free one-year membership to the club in Northwood are key components of the giveaway.  Anytime Fitness, the world’s largest co-ed fitness club chain, will also be giving away $10,000 to each of four individuals who “transform their lives through exercise and nutrition” and a $25,000 grand prize to help one lucky winner open his/her own Anytime Fitness club.

Rhoda Sommer, the owner of Anytime Fitness in Northwood, said that she will begin accepting applications for the free one-year membership to the club in May – “National Physical Fitness Month.”

“We’re looking for applicants who have compelling reasons to improve their health,” Sommer said, “but for one reason or another they have not been able to do so.  Perhaps it’s someone with an obesity-related heart condition or diabetes, or maybe a teacher or a parent who wants to set a better example for her students or children.”

Beginning May 1st, applicants should send an email message, explaining why they think they are deserving of the free membership, to [email protected].  The winner will be announced at the end of the month.

Anytime Fitness members, and non-members alike, are eligible to win the $1,000 prizes on AnytimeHealth.com.   To enter, simply log on, enroll as a free member to the site, and visit the “contest page.”  Individual contests will range from best health food recipe, to best weight loss story, to most creative fitness photo.

Anytime Fitness will also be “paying it forward” to deserving individuals via AnytimeHealth.com, throughout the year.  Club owners and corporate staffers will identify individuals who “need a little boost” or members who are “doing good in their community” and present them with prizes valued at up to $1,000 to use however they see fit, perhaps forwarding it on to someone else in need.

“New contests will be added to AnytimeHealth.com every day,” Sommer says.  “So, log on often.  There’s bound to be a contest most anyone could win.”

Free 7-day passes to Anytime Fitness are always available to download at AnytimeFitness.com.  “Now is a great time to check us out,” says Sommer“We’ll help you lead a healthier, happier life in 2011.”

Rumor says the impasse reached is because the teachers want a shorter work year, $7,000 raise plus 3% for the next three years, more personal days off, insurance to be higher and all benefits should they die to be paid to their heirs as well as significant others be insured, etc.

It’s about time for the citizens to demand results from the school staff for the more than average salaries already paid in Northwood.  What’s the results on the no child left behind?

Go to the State of New Hampshire web site if you have a computer and click on agencies and then click on Dept of Education and find Northwood and the results and I think many will be surprised at information that has been filtered for years. The average special education for the State of New Hampshire coded students is 14% but Northwood’s is higher, why?

Every once in a while I see a bumper sticker that says, “Thank a Teacher if You Can Read This”  then does the opposite hold true that we hold a teacher responsible if we can’t read the bumper sticker?
