Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Theatre to Present
Thoroughly Modern
Millie
From
Left: Greg Hatfield and Samantha Lepicier as Jimmy and Millie in
CBNA’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.
It’s New York City in the summer of 1922 when Millie Dillmount
arrives with stars in her eyes and a mission to make a new life for
herself, to become a modern woman. CBNA Theatre will share
Millie’s journey with its production of Thoroughly Modern Millie on
March 4th at 7 pm and March 5th at 2 pm and 7 pm in the Gerrish Gym
on the CBNA campus.
This high spirited musical romp shows a New
York full of intrigue and jazz, a time when women were entering the
workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing
forever.
Nearly forty students are involved in the bringing the
production to the stage. Junior Samantha Lepicier plays the
title role and will be joined on stage by seniors Aleisha Ashe,
Monique Bartlett, Maggie Blake, Alec Michael Correa, Cameron Durgin,

Most would not disagree that it is heart-breaking to witness the
horrific act of children being shot or of children being bullied by
others on the grounds of our local schools. You wonder what type of
person could do such a thing, what type of person could show such
disregard for the human rights of another. And, how does it all
start? You realize how fortunate you are that these harmful types of
anti-social behavior have not yet infected your community.
Regrettably, that calm is soon shattered with the realization that
the deviant behavior has taken up residence within your town,
spreading its cruelty onto your school grounds. Why do I make such
allegations?
On Valentine’s Day, I went to pick
my daughter up from Northwood Elementary School. With all the snow
we’ve had, the parking area at the school has become quite
condensed. The vehicles park as close to the building as they can
but, through traffic is not possible given the conditions. I parked
my vehicle in line with others and, behind those already in place. I
went into the main office to notify the school office that I was
there to pick up my daughter. While in the office, a woman came in
and complained that a vehicle was blocking traffic. After she
described the vehicle, I spoke up as the owner of that vehicle. The
school officials were witness to the conversation. When we went out
to the vehicle, we found the word “A**!” spelled out in capital
letters on the side of my vehicle.
My daughter is in the third
grade, capable of reading the foul message and, was very upset by
the act. In fact, she cried the whole way home! The behavior we
witness on the six o’clock news has taken residence in our town.
This is how it starts.

More
Constituent Meetings, Please
I am disappointed that, after
such a major vote as the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, a purely
symbolic gesture, Congressman Guinta only had one town hall meeting
in the week he was in the district recently. I did hear that
he met with the 912 group in Rochester, which I believe is a Glenn
Beck organization, but that was not posted on his public schedule.
I didn’t hear of any other public gatherings where he answered
questions and explained what he was doing in DC.
I
checked back at Carol Shea Porter’s schedule for the beginning of
the 2010 session. She actually held three constituent meetings, town
hall meetings, on the weekend of January 23-24, in Manchester,
Conway and Epping. Her first full week home in the district
was the week of February 14th; she was working a much busier
schedule in Washington DC than the new Republican-run House of
Representatives has planned for this year.
I was hoping Mr. Guinta and his
colleagues would find time in their shortened work schedule for more
initiatives on jobs. I haven’t heard of a single legislative project
from the Republicans that would help create work for the jobless.
I really would like to have a chance to talk to Mr. Guinta somewhere
near my home and ask him about that.

Could someone from Coe Brown send out some numbers for the towns
people, so we can see what we are really getting out of the
elementary school? Like how many students per year are told to leave
from the towns, including Northwood and statistics on the G.P.A. of
our students compared to the other towns. Things like that.
Thank-you Janet Delfuoco

Warrant
Article For Proposed Accessory Apartments Amendment To Northwood
Development Ordinance
The Northwood Planning Board has
proposed only one amendment to the Development Ordinance this year.
On March 8th, voters will consider by ballot, whether or not to
approve the granting of accessory apartments by special exception.
Approval by special exception means that certain conditions have to
be met in order for the use to be permitted. Those conditions
are that the apartment have no more than one bedroom, not more than
700 square feet, that it be within or attached to an owner occupied
single family residential unit, and that there be adequate septic
system, parking and that the lot is at least 80,000 square feet in
area and at least 150 feet of contiguous frontage on a state or town
road.
The intention of this article is to address the needs of
some families in the community by allowing them to have so-called
“mother-in-law” apartments without need for a variance before the
zoning board of adjustment. It may also help retain the
residential use of some of the larger farm houses that exist in
town.
Copies of the proposed language are available at the town
hall, Chesley Memorial Library, at the Northwood Post Office, or on
the town website.

I like to think of this as the “Tale of Two
Teachers”. Our principal was talking about a teacher Tuesday night.
He didn’t mention a name and no names are needed for my story.
We had a teacher and a half last year and cut down to one this year.
What a great teacher, no complaints, no whining. Nope, she put
her students first, works hard comes in a little early and leaves
late if necessary. A couple of the School Board members actually
clapped when he was done. Being curious I checked. It only gets
better. She is prepared, knows her students strengths and
weaknesses, and my goodness she teaches her subject.
Then there
is the other, you know the one that is always late in the morning
and quite often beats the kids out the door at closing bell.
Wasn’t that her shopping at Hannafords during prep time. Nothing is
never enough, so over worked and under-appreciated. So different.
The one should be carried on our shoulders and the other, well, you
know. Sad, it really is, both these teachers always get the
same, good or bad. The same raise, the same benefits, or the
same nothing. What a stupid system. Oh! Oh! Did you
see the NECAP results. Bad, bad, bad. Our school is broke and money
won’t fix it.
