"Working Out Sucks"

Anytime Fitness Gets Real To Help Others Get Healthy

It might be the last thing you would expect to hear the owner of a fitness club say. But Rhoda Sommer of Anytime Fitness in Northwood isn’t shy about admitting it: "Working out sucks."

"Let’s be honest," Sommer says. "Almost nobody truly enjoys working out. But what’s the alternative? Exercising is something all of us simply need to do in order to be healthy and enjoy the really important things in life."

In fact, Chuck Runyon, the CEO of Anytime Fitness, the world’s largest co-ed fitness club chain, has written a new book called "Working out Sucks." The book also includes a "21-day kick-start plan for total health and fitness." Co-authors Rebecca DeRossett and Brian Zehetner offer practical tips to change unhealthy habits, and cutting-edge diet and fitness advice.

All proceeds from the book will be donated to Limbs for Life, a charitable organization that provides prostheses to amputees.

The book is the centerpiece of a nationwide campaign to "deprogram" people who have been brainwashed by unhealthy habits, destructive attitudes and misinformation about health, according to Runyon. "It’s a no BS way to get back on track," Runyon says.

I have read the book says Sommer, and found that it changed my thought process as it applies to the need for exercise, and how to convey that to others. I think this book really will change peoples’ beliefs and actions around health and fitness.

"Working out may suck," Sommer says, "but, at Anytime Fitness, we can help make it suck less."

"Working out Sucks" will be available in stores in January, but it can be pre-ordered now at Amazon.com.

Letter

If you’ve read any of my previous letters to the editor, you know that I am puzzled by my congressman, Frank Guinta. What you might not realize is that I was never puzzled by Carol Shea-Porter when she represented me in Congress. Let me tell you why. It will take more than one letter. Carol did a lot for us in her four years in the US House of Representatives.

Let’s start with earmarks. Now before you recoil from that word, consider these facts: in 2007 NH got 7.1 cents back for each dollar we paid in taxes to the federal government; and earmarks represent 3/10 of 1% of the federal budget. If our representatives don’t ask that funds already appropriated be "earmarked" for projects in NH, that money will go to other states, like Mississippi, which got $2.02 for every dollar. Remember, all these funds create jobs.

A list of Carol’s earmarks from 2009-2010 show many concerned Shipyard construction and other defense-related projects. There was also money for dredging river channels, for police department equipment, for bridge reconstruction and repair, for community health centers and for education, including community colleges. All created local jobs.

Frank Guinta refuses to ask for earmarks. I wonder where our tax dollars will go, since without his requests, that money won’t come to NH. Does he honestly believe that congressmen from California or Alabama will request money for NH to get a bridge repaired or get needed Shipyard upgrades?
