Now is
the time to think about enrolling your child in preschool! The
Center School in Northwood is accepting registrations for the
2012-2013 school year.
The
Center School is a parent cooperative preschool located next to the
Town Hall in Northwood, which provides a developmental program for
three, four, and five year-olds of Northwood and surrounding towns.
There are openings in our two-day (T/Th) program and three-day
(M/W/F) morning programs. Call us soon and come for a visit! For
information, please call director Karen Andersen at the school at
942-7686.
The Northwood Democrats will hold their monthly meeting on Monday,
April 23, at 6:30 pm at the Community Center in Northwood Narrows.
Featured speaker will be Jeff Kantorowski, Coordinator of Benefit
Programs for NEA NH. He will discuss such topics as healthcare cost
drivers, state and federal initiatives, and an overview of
healthcare reform. For more information and to RSVP please e-mail

On
Wednesday, April 4, the Sun carried a short note from Ms. Bonnie Lee
Sears thanking the voters of Northwood for re-electing her to the
Budget Committee. A nice gesture, and I join her in thanking the
voters for re-electing me, also.
She went
on to thank the voters for re-electing Selectman Bob Holden and
School Board member Tim Jandebeur, who are, in her opinion, "both
truly the taxpayers friend."
This
"shout out" gave me pause: who is it that I want to serve? Surely
the property tax payers are an important segment of our community.
But should I think only of their interests when reviewing the Town
and School Budgets? What about the children of the town? What about
the non-property-owning residents? What about those who work here,
shop here – or are just passing through?
Too
often we focus narrowly on the concerns of taxpayers and give short
shrift to concern for the general good for all our citizens. I hope
to avoid that narrow view and look forward to serving all the
citizens of Northwood as a member of the Budget Committee.

Submitted By Lucy Silva and Roberta Stearns
HLWC had
its most successful Reciprocity Tea to date with 32 members of
neighboring women’s clubs and our GFWC-NH president, Nancy Greenberg
attending. The Coe Brown Northwood Academy music students performed
for us. Northwood is so fortunate to have these teens and their
teachers in our academy.
The May
meeting of HLWC will be a tour of the NH State House. Women are
asked to meet at the Northwood Congregational Church at 11:45 am on
May 1st to car pool to Concord. Please note that the baby shower for
Concord Hospital will be held in July.
HLWC is
a service organization and a member of General Federation of Women’s
Clubs-NH. Its object is to promote sociability and culture and to
make itself a power for good in the community. All women in the area
are invited to join us.

To The Editor
The
really big ship story of April, 2012 is the one hundredth
anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in the North Atlantic in
1912.
For some
of us older folk here in New Hampshire, the sinking tragedy we
remember is the loss of the nuclear submarine USS Thresher, built at
the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard. The sub was launched on July 9, 1960
and commissioned on August 3, 1961.
Less
than two years later, on April 10, 1963, while undergoing sea trials
about 220 miles east of Cape Cod, some mechanical failure occurred,
perhaps in the salt water piping system. The Thresher never
resurfaced, her remains were later found more than 8,000 feet below
the surface. All one hundred twenty-nine lives were lost.
One of
the men lost in the Thresher that April day in 1963 was a man from
Northwood, Lawrence Whitten, age thirty-three, listed in the records
as one of thirteen civilians aboard the submarine.
Whitten
was survived by his wife of a dozen years, Elizabeth, by two young
daughters, Ann and Sharron, and by friends and neighbors who have
not forgotten that sad time.
The Whittens lived at 121 First New Hampshire Turnpike. The owners
of that house now are Dan and Kate McNally. Kate has provided the
Northwood Historical Society with a folder of information about the
Thresher and about the Whittens.
