We all know what Walmart is, most of us probably know what
Amazon.com is, but do you know what ALEC is, and what the
relationship between them means?
ALEC is the American Legislative Exchange Council. You can find out
a lot about it at this link
http://www.alecexposed.org/wiki/ALEC_Exposed.
If you
have wondered about the many bills introduced in the legislature
this year that seemed to come out of nowhere, that nobody in NH
seemed to have asked for, you might very well find that they came
from ALEC and several other like-minded groups that are funded by
large corporations and write bills which benefit these businesses
and the causes their owners support.
Walmart and Amazon.com are the most recent of the group of companies
who have withdrawn their financial support from ALEC. Why? Because
of the outcry from consumers who have discovered that these
companies provide the backing for identical laws, which are hurting
the rest of us, being introduced all around the country. It’s
supposed to be a secret, but in the age of Google, and Facebook and
Twitter, it’s hard to keep a secret and the word gets around very
fast.
I don’t
know about you, but I really don’t like it when legislators in the
NH State House take their orders from outside the state. It makes me
angry when they get treated to trips and parties in Washington DC to
get their marching orders from people who don’t live here and have
no real interest in our welfare.
Have you asked your legislators about ALEC? Have they sponsored
legislation that was written by ALEC? Taken trips paid for by ALEC?
You can find out here:
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=ALEC_Politicians.
Might be worth knowing before the election this time.

Alliance for Retired Americans, speaks.
The
Meadows at Northwood is a supportive housing for the elderly complex
at 243 Bow Street in Northwood, NH. The New Hampshire Alliance for

Else Cilley Chapter, NSDAR
Awards, presidential games, and patriotic prizes contributed to the
fun at the May meeting of the Else Cilley Chapter of the Daughters
of the American Revolution. At the chapter’s historic Nottingham
Schoolhouse in Nottingham, NH on Saturday, May 19th, the winner of
the DAR American History Essay Contest, Haley Donovan, of Timberlane
Regional Middle School was recognized. Haley is a resident of
Sandown, NH. Her essay was an account of Oliver Perry’s significance
during the War of 1812 creatively written as a grandparent’s story
to a grandson. Haley was awarded the DAR American History Bronze
medal, a Chapter level first place certificate and a monetary prize.
Haley and her grandparents joined members in playing a Presidential
trivia game, created by Chaplain Becky Rush. Haley’s love of history
came through as she won several of the prizes, which included books,
Else Cilley cookbook, patriotic decorations and the like.
Following photos, the business meeting resumed and included the
President General’s message read by Regent Jan Gilman and a National
Defense message prepared by Peg Franz. Reports of officers and
committee chairpersons were given.
Project
Patriot Chair Lynne Sweet is also collecting comfort items to send
to troops serving in Afghanistan and money to purchase phone cards
to be sent to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. This
overseas military hospital is the nearest treatment center for
wounded soldiers coming from Iraq and Afghanistan. Soldiers arrive
with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The phone cards,
provided by the DAR, are placed next to each soldier’s hospital bed
for their use during recovery.
Business
discussion centered on necessary repairs that have been done and
those still needing to be completed at the chapter owned Nottingham
Square Schoolhouse. The building is a Nationally Registered Historic
Building. Members shared fundraising ideas and suggested that
members donate items for drawings to be held in July and September.
A member has already donated a quilt and tickets will be sold all
year with a drawing at our meeting in November. Regent Jan Gilman
announced that the next meeting will be held at the chapter’s
historic Nottingham Schoolhouse in Nottingham, NH on Saturday, June
16. Nottingham Boy Scouts, accompanied by scouts from Northwood,
will join the Else Cilley Chapter in providing a Flag Disposal
Ceremony. The community is encouraged to bring old and tattered
flags, which no longer should be flown proudly, to the ceremony.
Refreshments will be served beginning at 1:30 pm with the Flag
Disposal ceremony immediately to follow on the lawn outside the
schoolhouse on Ledge Farm Road.
Women
interested in joining the DAR are encouraged to attend a meeting.
The DAR is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service
organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American
history and securing America’s future through education. The public
is always welcome to attend.

Chat
with the Chief
I would
like to cordially invite the citizens of Northwood to join me
Tuesday night, June 19th at 6:00 pm at the Northwood Town Hall for a
"Chat with the Chief."
I hope
this is the first of a series of informal monthly conversations with
the citizens of Northwood to promote an open dialogue between the
citizens and the police department. This will be an opportunity for
citizens to voice their concerns, learn about the general operation
of the police department, hear about existing programs and future
programs run by the department, and to strengthen the relationship
between the citizens and the Northwood Police Department. I truly
hope to see you there.
Respectfully submitted,
Glendon
