Letter To The Editor
To the
Editor,
Very
interesting meeting last night. Three gentlemen from NHDOT met
those of us who are concerned about safety on Rt. 4. Too many
accidents and fatalities on this very busy corridor from Concord to
the coast. Commuters in a hurry, semi behemoths barreling through
and of course businesses want everyone to stop and make a purchase.
We had
our say and many good ideas were passed around. It became very clear
that there are, as usual, two sides to every story. 35 mph might
make it safer but completely ignores the commuter just traveling
through. Would 35 mph from Rt. 152 (one of the most dangerous
intersections in our State) to TD Bank be fair? Should there be left
turning lights at the Rt.4/43/9/202 interchange? Lights at Ridge
Road, Rt. 152/4, School Street or Blakes Hill/Main Street?
What
rights do those who live on Rt. 4 have? Certainly safety. What
rights do those who are traveling through have? Certainly reasonable
passage. Where is that compromise? More center turning lanes, right
turning deceleration lanes, lights set up better, better signage are
all good ideas. Who pays?
There
was, to me anyway, two consistent undertones. The NHDOT on a number
of occasions said that they were not aware of an issue. Very
professionally, each Northwood complainant was given a card and
asked to set up an appointment so that someone could address the
issue. Thank you NHDOT.
The
other, lack of enforcement. I want to thank the Chief for putting
this meeting together. 45 mph through Northwood with the exception
of one small area is a safe speed. 55 or 60 is not. Forcing your way
through a left turn at Rt. 4/43/9/202 is illegal, yet many do it
daily. I don’t speed through Deerfield. Why? Enforcement!
Drive
45 mph through Northwood.
