8th Grade Car Wash at Northwood Garage
The
Northwood School Class of 2014 is holding a car wash at the
Northwood Garage on Saturday, May 31st from 9am to 12pm. A bake sale
will also take place. The class continues to raise funds for their
class trip to the White Mountains in June. The car wash will be
manned by students and parents of the 8th grade class at Northwood
School.
The
Northwood Garage has long been a supporter of local community groups
who are in need of raising funds for different events and
activities. The car wash will be by donation, with a recommended
donation of at least $5.00. All baked goods will be sold by
donation. All profits will go directly toward this year’s class
trip. HOPE TO SEE YOU AT NORTHWOOD GARAGE ON SATURDAY, MAY 31ST!
GoFundMe!
In
June, the 8th grade Class of 2014 will be celebrating the end of
their 9 years of education at Northwood School with a field trip to
the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire. The students are all
very excited to connect, hike, play games, cook-out and swim.
The 8th
graders have been working hard over the last several months
fund-raising, but we still have more work to do. We are asking for
your help by making a donation directly to the class. Any amount
will help. To make a secure, online donation, go to
www.GoFundMe.com/8kxwxs. If you prefer to make a donation by
check or money order, please make it out to Northwood School with
“Class of 2014” in the memo field and send it to Northwood School,
511 1st NH Turnpike, Northwood, NH 03261. Thank you for your
generosity and support!

Northwood Recreation Update
Lacrosse Information Night-June 1st
The
Northwood Recreation Department is organizing a Lacrosse program
this summer. This is an introductory program for boys and girls in
1st – 8th grade with practices on Tuesday nights and scrimmages on
Thursday nights through the summer. Not only will we be teaching
the children lacrosse skills and rules, but we will also be teaching
parents how to coach lacrosse. We will be holding an information
night to answer questions you may have. The coaches will be giving
an overview of the program as well as providing details about
available discounts on equipment. There is also the opportunity to
purchase used equipment. Registration on site will be available. Visit
www.northwoodnh.org
for registration information and additional information about these
programs. Details can be found in our Brochure on the website. Or
call the Recreation Department at 942-5586 x209 with questions.
Letter
To The Editor
Those
Powerful School Boards
I had
no sooner written a letter to The Suncook Sun lamenting the loss of
authority (to Washington) of school boards like Northwood’s, than I
was proved completely wrong.
Just a
little north of here, in Gilford, the school board showed what kind
of muscle these boards still possess. William Baer, father of a 14
year-old student, exceeded his 2 minute time limit for speaking.
Now, usually in such cases, persuasion eventually gets the speaker
to stop talking. The Gilford School Board, however, whose patience
is limited, decided that use of the iron fist was the way to deal
with Mr. Baer, so they had him removed from the meeting, handcuffed,
and arrested for talking too long.
He’d
been protesting a passage in a book his daughter was required to
read for her freshman English class. I’d quote the offending
passage, but The Sun would probably not be able to print it, since
The Sun is a family publication, after all, and not a classroom book
meant for schoolkids.
While
student discipline may be an ongoing problem in some places, the
Gilford school board has demonstrated that it sure knows how to keep
students’ parents in their place, at any rate. Fortunately, the
meeting was videotaped and posted online, so by now the entire
nation has had the opportunity to witness the power and authority
exercised by at least one New Hampshire school board.
