Northwood resident and watercolor artist, Eileen Golden, has an
exhibit at the Dover Public Library, 73 Locust Street, Dover.
The library is open Mon.-Wed. 9-8:30 pm, Thurs. and Fri. 9-5:30
pm, Sat. 9-5 pm, and Sun. 1-5PM.
The
watercolor exhibit runs the entire month of October with an
Artist Reception scheduled for October 10 from 2 to 4 PM.
September Was Suicide Awareness Month
On 9/25 the culmination of all the efforts of more than 50
Willow’s Run volunteers and 20 local businesses was realized
when race directors, Kim Mihelich and Jamie Joyce presented a
check for $3,025.00 to Headmaster Smith of Coe Brown Northwood
Academy. The guidance department already has plans to use the
funds for intensive staff training and purchasing specialized
curriculum materials to educate the student body.
According to the CDC suicide is the 10th leading cause of death
overall. Someone takes their own life in the U.S. every 13
minutes. Mental illness is the leading contributing cause to
suicide. However, 80-90% of those affected who have access to
care can be effectively treated with medication and/or
counseling. September was Suicide Awareness Month with the
purpose of shining a light on those preventative measures that
can save a life.
Willow’s Run is a local 501 C3 charitable organization with a
mission to providing funds to local high schools for suicide
education and prevention. Teenagers are a particularly
vulnerable population, so it is vital to give school counselors
the resources they need to recognize youth in crisis and the
means to assist them. On August 8th, Willow’s Run held their
first 5K charity race on the beautiful grounds of Coe Brown
Northwood Academy. With overwhelming support from the staff and
student body, a very successful race and raffle was held. There
were 141 total registrants on race day. Overall and age group
winners received beautiful medals and prizes donated by local
businesses. The fundraising efforts wrapped up with an
“after-party” two weeks later at Cooper Hill Pizzeria.

Opening Days at Northwood School 2015-2016

Students and staff at Northwood School have hit the ground
running for the 2015 -2016 school year. The custodial staff has
done a fantastic job inside and outside the building, to prepare
for the new year. We welcomed eleven new staff members to our
dedicated team of educators who bring a wealth of experience,
energy and enthusiasm to share with our students. Our new staff
members include Grade 1 teachers Ms. Harvey and Ms. Hathaway,
Grade 3 teacher Ms. Smith, Grade 7 Math teacher Ms. Clemons,
Grade 7/8 Social Studies teacher Ms. Kelly, Grade 8 Math teacher
Ms. Feiden, Art teacher Mr. Olorunfemi, Music teacher Ms.
Hashem, Physical Education/Health teacher Ms. Tyler,
Speech/Language Pathologist Ms. Nelson and Assistant Principal
Ms. Cremone.
Our
staff began the year with professional development opportunities
in the areas of RtI (Response to Instruction), Data Use, Block
Scheduling, Behavior Training, Confidentiality, Climate and
Culture, Team Building and Instructional Strategies. There was
much excitement and energy shared throughout the sessions and
the time just flew by. We implemented a new daily class
schedule which includes core class blocks for the middle school
students and RtI blocks for all students in grades K-8. We are
looking forward to continuing to build our RtI program, now in
it’s second full year of implementation.
Our
faculty and staff proudly hosted several well-received events in
the month of September. On September 1st we held a Parent
Information Night and presented on various topics such as RtI
and our new building schedule. On September 4th, we conducted a
very successful school-wide Safety Day for all students in
grades K-8. We are so pleased we were able to work
together with various community agencies to take proactive steps
to assist all students and staff to review many of our safety
procedures and protocols. This full-day experience included
practice of various emergency drills including a lockdown, fire
drill, cafeteria lockdowns and an off-campus evacuation drill.
It is important to inform students of how various emergency
situations will be handled during the school day and give them
the opportunity to see and feel the process before an actual
emergency arises. In addition to the practice drills, students
participated in informational sessions offered by the Northwood
Police, Northwood Fire, the State Police, Northwood
Transportation, and our Technology Director. We are grateful to
all the area agencies, including also The Meadows at Northwood
and Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, who collaborated with us to
take the time to properly educate all students and staff
regarding our emergency procedures and safety protocols in
advance of needing to use them.
The
community support continued on September 15th when we hosted our
2nd Annual K-8 Meet, Greet and Eat Open House and BBQ. We
appreciate all the efforts of the Northwood community in helping
to make this event a huge success as well. The Northwood Fire
and Police Departments contributed to the grilling and serving
of the meal. Our Northwood Transportation and Pirate Mechanical
assisted with a shuttle service and overflow parking area.
Students prepared projects and papers to share with the many
family members who visited our classroom displays and engaged in
the fun activities offered by each grade in their classrooms.
The turnout on this beautiful summer evening was impressive,
with close to five hundred hotdogs being served. It really does
take a village to educate a child and our Northwood community
has proudly demonstrated how important active participation in
school activities really is. We are grateful to the support of
our Northwood community and look forward to strengthening our
connection to families and community agencies as the year
progresses. Thank you.
