The Northwood Lake Watershed Association is looking for paid and volunteer Lake Hosts for the 2016 season.  Lake Hosts inspect boats going into and out of Northwood Lake for invasive species. If you enjoy meeting people, spending time outside on the lake this is a wonderful job that gives back to the community.   Keeping new invasive species out of Northwood is an important part the work the Watershed Association is doing to maintain the quality of the lake.   Keeping the present invasive species from leaving the lake on a boat trailer is good citizenship and helps to protect hundreds of other New Hampshire lakes.  Join us, as a volunteer or a paid Lake Host.  Training is provided.  Call Jim Vaillancourt at 942-5365 and help us maintain our wonderful resource, Northwood Lake.

Northwood Historical Society Program

Are you the proud owner or just interested in the preservation of old barns?  The Northwood Historical Society is pleased to sponsor a program by John Porter on “The History of Agriculture as Told by Barns” on May 17, 2016, 7:00 PM at the Northwood Comunity Hall located at the corner of Main and School Streets.  The program is free and open to the public.  A pot luck supper will be held starting at 6:00 PM, bring a salad, main dish or dessert to share and your place setting, beverages will be provided.

The evolution of barn architecture tells the story of New Hampshire agriculture.   Barns changed from the early English style, to Yankee style, to gambrel and then pole barns to accommodate the changing agriculture.   This presentation will be a chronological walk through time, with photo illustrations of barns around the state that are examples of these eras of agricultural history.

John Porter was raised on a dairy farm in Lebanon NH and graduated from UNH with a BS Degree in Animal Science; then went on to obtain his Master’s Degree from Cornell University in Animal Nutrition and Farm Management; and later earned another Master’s Degree from Bob Jones University in Education Administration.  From 1974 to 2006, he served as a Dairy Specialist for UNH Cooperative Extension.  He authored the book “Preserving Old Barns,” was editor and contributing author of “The History and Economics of the NH Dairy Industry” and was a contributing author of “Crosscurrents of Change,” an updated history of Concord, NH. He still be works part time for UNH and operates his own consulting company, Farm Planning Services, LLC.

We hope to on see you on May 17 for this evening of good food, conversation and informative program.
