Kicking Off The New Year In Style

Epsom Public Library is pleased to present a special exhibit of miniature furniture hand-crafted by Ralph VanHorn of Pittsfield. Representing a variety of 18th century styles, including Early American Primitive, Hepplewhite, Chippendale and Adam, the furniture is designed on a scale of ½ inch to a foot. Crafted mostly of basswood, the pieces are stained to reflect the types of wood used in full-scale furniture of the times. Exquisitely detailed, down to each tiny drawer pull and hinge, the pieces are further enhanced by Mr. VanHorn’s collection of limited-production miniature Oriental rugs created by Pittsfield Weaving Company.

This delightful exhibit will be on display through March 14, and may be viewed during regular library hours: Monday- Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.  For further information, call 736-9920.

Stephanie Smith of Pittsfield, NH, was named to the Fall 2008 Dean’s List at Chester College of New England. Smith is the daughter of Dale and Karen Smith, and a 2008 graduate of Pittsfield Middle High School. She is a creative writing major at the college.

Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor,
Apparently, disagreeing with Dan Schroth makes you a gang member.

Guess I’m a member of Susan’s gang because I’d like to protect our drinking water. I think that I’d be worse than unemployed if I had no drinking water.

The Greater Pittsfield Chamber Of Commerce

The Greater Pittsfield Chamber of Commerce held their first 2009 Business After Hours on January 15th. The event was sponsored by the Pittsfield Youth Workshop. They provided a fun outstanding event for all Chamber Members to meet and interact with one another.

Refreshments and snacks were put out for everyone to enjoy. The first hour provided us with a first hand experience of how PYW ran for the doors do not close until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night. The kids were there enjoying games of pool, ski ball, foosball and guitar hero.

Once the kids left for the evening it was time for the true colors of the Members to shine! Several of the Members played guitar hero, while the others were entertained by watching! Overall there was fun to be had by everyone attending!

The Members all enjoyed their time during The Greater Pittsfield Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours. The turnout for this event was around 15 to 20 Members, an excellent turnout considering the bitterly cold weather. Each Member was able to interact with one another and had the opportunity to learn about the individual businesses and the services they offer.

We would like to send out a special Thank You to the Pittsfield Youth Workshop for offering the space for such a wonderful event. Thanks for the games and entertainment that will never be forgotten by all who were there!!

Letter

Thank you to the people who came to the January 15 Planning Board Hearing to learn about the citizen zoning ordinance petition. We are trying to make the zoning ordinance fair, which it is not now. We want a zoning ordinance that is clear on its face, that is enforced according to its clear meaning, and that provides equal justice for all.

Appointed alternate Tom Hitchcock explained the Planning Board’s position. Things are changing “hour by hour” he warned. The Planning Board must be free to respond to these rapidly changing conditions. The Planning Board must not be bound by black-letter law.

Tom is being hysterical. We face no crisis that requires suspending democracy. The Planning Board can and should submit to the will of the town meeting, which means obeying a well-defined zoning ordinance.

The Planning Board voted 3-2 to “not recommend” the citizen proposal on the March 2009 town meeting ballot. Marilyn Roberts, Fred Hast, and Tom Hitchcock voted to “not recommend,” while Dan Greene and Gerard Leduc voted against that motion (that is, they voted in support of the petition). Tom Hitchcock, as an appointed alternate, is unaccountable for his vote. But Marilyn Roberts and Fred Hast are both up for election this March. Please remember that, on January 15, Marilyn Roberts and Fred Hast voted against equal justice for all.

To learn more about the citizen proposal, please visit our web site at http://czop.wordpress.com.

Thank you,
Jim Pritchard

Shinseki Sworn In As VA  Head

Submitted By Merrill Vaughn
Peterson-Cram Post 75 Of Pittsfield
Retired Army Gen. Eric K. Shinseki took the oath of office today as the Nation’s seventh Secretary of Veterans Affairs, assuming the leadership of the Department of Veterans Affairs following Tuesday’s confirmation by the Senate.

“The overriding challenge I am addressing from my first day in office is to make the Department of Veterans Affairs a 21st century organization focused on the Nation’s Veterans as its clients,” Shinseki said.

Shinseki plans to develop a 2010 budget within his first 90 days that realizes the vision of President Obama to transform VA into an organization that is people-centric, results-driven and forward-looking.

Key issues on his agenda include smooth activation of an enhanced GI Bill education benefit that eligible Veterans can begin using next fall, streamlining the disability claims system, leveraging information technology to accelerate and modernize services, and opening VA’s health care system to Veterans previously unable to enroll in it, while facilitating access for returning Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans.

Shinseki, a former Army Chief of Staff, takes the reins of a 284,000-employee organization delivering health care and financial benefits to millions of Veterans and survivors under a $98 billion budget authorized this year through networks of regional benefits offices and health care facilities from coast to coast.

Born in 1942 on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, Shinseki graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1965. He served two combat tours and was wounded in action in Vietnam. He served with distinction in Europe, the Pacific and stateside, eventually becoming the Army’s senior leader from June 1999 to June 2003.
Retired from military service in August 2003, Shinseki’s military decorations include three Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts.

Shinseki succeeds Dr. James B. Peake as Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
The above was a release by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Letter

To all the citizens of New Hampshire:
On Tuesday, January 20th, our forty-fourth President of the United States, President Barack Obama, was sworn into office. During the election process in the State of New Hampshire, the person I backed was Senator John McCain and I was very proud to do that.

The election is over, the people of this great country made their choice.  I personally pray and hope for the health and well-being of our new President and his entire new administration.  This country is much more important than I am.

I will do everything in my power and wishing you to do the same to help all party lines move this country forward to remain the greatest country in the world.

Senator John “Jack” S. Barnes, Jr.

Kids’ Theater Workshop Celebrates 10th Season With “Once Upon a Mattress”

The Kids’ Theater Workshop, a special part of The Pittsfield Players, is rehearsing for its lovable production of G2K (Getting to Know) “Once Upon a Mattress.” The musical is based on the story of “The Princess and the Pea,” with music and dance especially suited for young performers.

If you think you know the whole story of Hans Christian Andersen’s princess who couldn’t sleep, you may want to check this show out! You will be pleasantly surprised on the twist the old familiar fairytale has taken.

With characters such King Sextimus, Queen Aggravain, Prince Dauntless, Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, Lady Larken and Sir Harry, this show is non-stop wholesome family entertainment.

As the story goes, the king and queen rule a small kingdom where the king is mute and the queen is a doting mother. According to her, no woman would be worthy enough to be the prince’s bride. If that isn’t bad enough, the royal decree has it that nobody can marry before the prince does!  But Lady Larken and Sir Harry are in a rush to get married. Harry takes it upon himself to find a wife for the prince. Will the girl he finds pass “the test?”

The Kids’ Theater Workshop project was designed to develop basic theater skills in children and teenagers, through the process of staging a production by kids, for kids, with everyone participating in some valuable way toward the success of the show.

The children then perform the show for their peers in two special afternoon presentations to audiences from the local elementary schools, and to the general public in three evening performances. The goal has been to attract kids to the stage and to acting by watching other kids perform as well as to develop a group of young performers for The Players. This year marks the tenth successful season of the Workshop, and the program has attracted many more children and young adults to the Scenic Theatre stage in those years. Many of our Workshop kids go on to perform in other Players’ productions, as well as with other theater groups throughout the state.

“Once Upon a Mattress” is produced under special agreement with Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatricals. Music is by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer. Performances are Thursday, February 19, Friday, February 20 and Saturday, February 21, all at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 and available at TicketLeap at: www.pittsfieldplayers.com. The theater is located at 19 Depot Street, Pittsfield.
