who attended and this seminar qualified the Center for the
Sharing Advantage Program initiated by Wells Fargo Mortgage
Corp.
On December 8th, Wells Fargo Mortgage Corp. presented
the Pittsfield Senior Center with a check for $600. In

Pittsfield High School Alumni Association
Did you know that there is an established Alumni Association at
Pittsfield High School? Any person who attended or graduated
from PHS, PMHS or the Academy is automatically a member.
The
Alumni Association was officially formed in May 2006 and our
mission is to “foster a spirit of loyalty and commitment among
PHS, the community and the alumni. The Alumni Association shall
support the continued growth and development of the school and
encourage and coordinate activities that would benefit the
interests of PHS and the community.”
Currently the officers
of the Alumni Association are: President, Tobi (Gray) Chassie,
’73; Vice President, Carole (Fife) Richardson, ’69;
Secretary, Andrea (Grainger) Riel, ’84; Treasurer, Louie Houle,
’72; Membership Secretary, Sandy Bucknam, ’73; Historian, Ted
Mitchell, ’68; and Members at Large, Paula (Nickerson) Driscoll,
’86 and Chris Ward, ’82.
We meet 4 times per year, usually
September, January, March and June at 6:30 p.m. at the PMHS
Media (Library) Center. Members are ALWAYS welcome and
encouraged to attend. Please check the website for meeting
dates.
The Alumni Association has provided a $500 scholarship
to a (PMHS) graduate starting in 2007. The past recipients
have been Nicole Parker in ‘07; Kelsey Metcalf in ’08 and Sarah
Buchanan in ’09. We have also sponsored a graduation breakfast
for the Senior Class. A pancake, sausage, fruit and drink
breakfast is provided for the class and is a chance for the
Alumni Association to introduce ourselves to the class members
and ask for their involvement as they move on to further
schooling, the Service or employment.
We have had a presence
at various local events (such as Old Home Day, Balloon Rally and
the Alumni Basketball games) to collect current names, addresses
and email contact information to add to the database. Our goal
is to update and keep current contact information for classes
planning reunions.
There are no dues collected. We do
send an annual letter (which hopefully will soon become a
newsletter) soliciting donations to help defray costs associated
with certain projects that the Alumni Association is or will be
working on. The funds collected are also used for the annual
scholarship.
Check out the Alumni Association’s web site at
http://pittsfield-nh.com/sau/. (click Alumni tab) It’s
constantly being worked on. We’re also on Facebook.
The latest project the Alumni Association is undertaking is
another ALL CLASS REUNION. Save the date of July 17, 2010, (Old
Home Day!) The Reunion will be a Meet and Greet open house style
at PMHS with a chance to tour both facilities (PMHS and PES);
visit with classmates and others; enjoy some refreshments and
(we hope) a chicken BBQ dinner.
Anyone who is interested in
helping with the Reunion or joining the planning committee,
please call Andi Riel at 435-6346 or Paula Driscoll at 435-8272.
Also, plan to join the Alumni Association and attend one of our
meetings, we’d love to see new faces and we welcome new ideas!

Dorcas Guild
Submitted By Joan Riel
The Dorcas Guild of
the First Congregational Church in Pittsfield met the evening of
January 12th in the church vestry. Peggy Jacobs conducted the
meeting which opened with devotions by Nancy Fogg who read “A
Horse Thief On Trial.” A comical reading with Biblical
references. All joined in the Lord’s Prayer.
The Secretary
gave her report and read six items of correspondence. The
Treasurer gave her report as well as the financial results of
the two fairs.
Nella Hobson brought the Food Basket which
went to Nancy Fogg. Elaine Coffey has the apron. The Mystery
Package, brought by Reny Boyd was won by Arlene Weeks. 2010 Year
Books, prepared by Bev Moore, were distributed. The 2010
Christmas and Craft Fairs were discussed. It was felt several
committees should be set up for each with one person overseeing
the work of the committees.
January being our Mission
Disbursing Month - Sums were voted to Neighbor To Neighbor; New
Tribes Missions; Pittsfield and Barnstead Fuel Assistance;
Pittsfield and Barnstead Food Pantry; a donation to Haiti will
be decided at a later date.
A report was given on the
distribution of the hats, mittens, and scarfs collected during
the Advent and Christmas Seasons. A good supply of each went to
Blueberry Express and Barnstead and Pittsfield Elementary
Schools. Our service project for this year will be towels and
face cloths to needy families.
It was voted to host the
Sunday morning coffee hour once a month with Dorcas members
bringing a food donation.
This was the annual birthday
meeting for everyone hosted by Elsie Morse and Nancy Fogg. A
Boston cream pie and an orange marmalade cake were served with
ice cream, fresh strawberries, crackers and a cheese ball and
other goodies. Candles on the cakes were extinguished by Arlene
Weeks, the eldest, and Gailann Newton, the youngest. A wrapped
book swap was held and Happy Birthday sung to all.
The next
meeting will be held on February 9th with Peggy Jacobs and
Gailann Newton as hostesses.
This will be “banana split
night” and members are asked to bring their favorite topping.
Pittsfield And Other NH Districts Receive Grants To Transform
Schools With 21st Century Classrooms
Submitted By: Doug
Kilmister, Principal
Pittsfield Elementary School
The
Pittsfield School District is one of twenty-two New Hampshire
school districts that have been awarded grants of approximately
$145,000 each from the Federal Enhancing Education Through
Technology Program (NCLB Title II-D) as part of the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.
A total of
$3.2 million in federal funds has been allocated to New
Hampshire schools to develop technology rich learning
environments as part of the state’s 21st Century Classrooms
Initiative. These classrooms will be well equipped with computer
hardware, software, electronic presentation systems, and rich
digital and online curricular resources. Students in these
classrooms will be highly engaged in interactive learning and
higher level thinking skills, whether learning math, science,
reading, or history. The use of digital cameras, interactive
white boards, robust courseware, digital content, computers, and
mobile learning tools will provide students with opportunities
to collaborate and connect to rich and relevant content.
Investment in core components for technology, collaborative
planning, enthusiastic and well-informed leadership, intensive
professional development, and IT support are some of the key
elements necessary to transform these schools into 21st century
classrooms.
Pittsfield’s grant, entitled “The Pittsfield
Digital Classroom Project” directly involves eight teachers -
four at Pittsfield Elementary School and four at Pittsfield
Middle High School - who will have access to a set of digital
tools in their classrooms for one year. The tools include
interactive whiteboards, teacher laptops, shared sets at each
school of 24 netbooks (small portable laptops), digital cameras,
and other peripherals. After the project period, the tools and
practices will be disseminated widely across the district. The
project seeks to increase student engagement and ownership of
learning; to provide students with opportunities to reach larger
audiences through publishing original work, collaborating with
others, and participating in digital communities; to promote
authentic, inquiry-based and project-based learning; and to
further develop the use of digital portfolios, broadening the
varieties of artifacts and performances included in student
portfolios.
The eight project teachers will take an on-line
course in the use of Web 2.0 tools in the classroom. Over the
spring and summer of 2010 they will be supported to design
curriculum units that employ the tools. In the fall they will
teach units that involve students working in several areas,
including writing, science, English, social studies, and French.
The project will also involve community volunteers, who will
support teachers in the use of technology. A one-day conference
for teachers and community members is being planned for August
in the days prior to school. For more information, community
members are invited to contact Doug Kilmister, PES Principal and
project manager, at
[email protected]
The other school
districts receiving awards through this program are: Alton,
Bartlett, Chester, SAU 6 (including Claremont and Unity),
Laconia, Lafayette Regional, Manchester, Milton, Nashua, Oyster
River, SAU #53 (including Allenstown, Deerfield, Epsom,
Pembroke), Portsmouth, Profile, Raymond, Somersworth, Timberlane
Regional, and White Mountains Regional.
