F.B. Argue Recreation Area News

The Pittsfield Parks and Recreation Committee would like to thank Steve Catalano and the Pittsfield Rotary Club for their continued support. They supplied sand and much needed painting of the building, bridge, and playground equipment this year. Also, we would like to thank Nicole and Dan Ward for planting the flowers in our wooden barrels. They look great! MANY THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!

The summer has gotten off to a great start with the toasty weather that we have been having. The area is open on Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12:00 until 5:00, Tuesday and Thursday from 12:00 to 7:00, and Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00.

Admission cost is 75 cents per day for children, one dollar for adults, and children under 5 are admitted free with a paid adult.

We have finished the first set of swim lessons and the second set (night lessons) started on July 12. There is still room in the second session and the third session which will begin on July 26. Please come down to the recreation area to sign up if you are interested in swimming lessons for your child. The registration fee for swimming lessons is $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents.

We are having sand castle building contests on Friday afternoons again this year, Airhead bingo on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00, and duck hunt on Monday afternoon at 2:30.

We are again offering Senior Swim time in coordination with our local senior center. If you would like some peaceful swim time without the children, you are welcome to come down to the recreation area from 11:00 to 12:00 on Monday and Thursday morning. Free of charge… just enjoy the water.

We also have two craft days scheduled. Tuesday, July 27 will be Decorate Bucket Hat Day. The first 48 children will be able to decorate their hats with fabric markers. On Tuesday, August 11, the first 50 children will be given a kick ball to decorate. These are both new activities and we look forward to having a lot of fun doing them. We will also have s’more day sometime during July and August when everyone can make and eat a s’more. These dates will be posted at the pool area.

On August 12, the Carpenter Library and the Pittsfield Recreation committee will be having a special presentation by Wildlife Encounters. This program will culminate the reading program at the library. The rain location for this presentation will be at the Pittsfield Community Center.

Because of the water depth, we have not been able to use the diving board this year. We have applied to the state for a dredging permit. We are hoping that we will be allowed to dredge so that our pond will be deeper next year and we will again be able to use our diving board. Because of the shallow water, we are allowing floating toys to be used by children and adults who are able to swim.

We are hoping that more and more people will continue to use the recreation area and that if you have any ideas for additional activities that you will contact one of the members of the Pittsfield Recreation Committee or come down to the recreation area and ask for Minni.

Come on down and join in the fun!

Little Red Wagon Theatre Group To perform At Old Home Day

The Old Home Day committee will host the University of New Hampshire’s LITTLE RED WAGON professional children’s theatre troupe on Sat., July 17 at 10:00 a.m. at the Gazebo in Dustin Park for a performance of “Jack and the Beanstalk And The Two-Headed Ogre.” The theatre troupe performs for children and family audiences at schools, libraries, festivals, fairs, banquets, hospitals, recreation centers, state parks, camps and churches.

The Little Red Wagon is the longest running nonprofit, children’s theatre tour in the U.S and performs at nearly 70 locations in New England each summer.

Founded in 1971, The Little Red Wagon became a grassroots model program for the State of NH and was instrumental to the introduction of Theatre Education into the public school system as a supportive tool for reading and learning.

The Little Red Wagon’s “Jack and the Beanstalk and the Two-Headed Ogre” is about Jack and his mother who were very poor and had to sell their beloved cow, but Jack sold the cow for some “magic” beans. When he took the beans home, his mother was so mad that she threw them out the window…and so begins the tale of Jack, his mother, the giant beanstalk and the two headed ogre who lives above the clouds. This 45 minute play is best for the Pre-K to grade 3 audiences, but all ages will enjoy this enduring tale.

For information about booking a touring show, contact the UNH Dept. Theatre and Dance office at 603-862-2150 or [email protected].

Julianne Gadoury Graduates From Stony Brook University

Julianne Gadoury graduated from Stony Brook University, in Stony Brook, NY, in May 2010.  After completion of a three year program, she has earned her M.F.A in Printmaking and Master’s Certificate in Advanced Cultural Studies.

Her works take traditional printmaking techniques and apply to non-traditional techniques to  create non-traditional pieces.

During her tenure she taught Basic Printmaking and Foundations of Drawing courses to undergraduate students. Her works have been displayed at thirteen selected group exhibitions and three solo exhibitions. Her most recent work displayed at Lawrence Alloway Memorial Gallery in Stony Brook, NY, include: Stoned II, Stoned, Please Stand By and Polar Bears in Space.  Her works expose abstract social relationships through the creation of images and scenarios that the viewer can relate with.  Her work forces the viewer to challenge their own role in society and to question the idea that there is someone else in the world to take action and be responsible.

Larger global issues and complacency in our involvement within them are depicted in Polar Bears in Space and Please Stand By.  Indeed her large installation of a polar bear made completely of wire and see-through seemed to emulate this complacency as many of us see-through issues of global responsibilities as being far out of reach. Although we know they exist, we prefer not to take action but to see-through them.

Please Stand By, is also a print collection of works that forces us to consider the repetition in our daily lives, collectively as a culture and how culture lulls us into being complacent about issues that need change.

Indeed the pieces that make up this body of work expose issues most find deplorable and force us to look inward and realize the connection between the state of such global concerns and our own complacency.

She has been presented with numerous awards and grants. Julianne is the daughter of Gary Gadoury of Alton and Terry Gadoury of Portsmouth. You can view her entire collection of works @ www.juliannegadoury.com.
