Letter
Dear Pittsfield Voters: Thank you for entrusting me to a seat on
the Planning Board. Your interest made all the difference in
this election. Thank you again, and please stay involved!
Thank you, Jim Pritchard
It’s
hard to believe, but there are still good guys out there. My
name is Royce Sargent; my back is so bad that I can’t cut firewood
anymore. I want to thank F.L. Merrill Construction, Frank
Merrill, K & B Excavating, Brett Brown and Luis Bisbal. They
showed up with an excavator and cut enough wood for me for five
years! Thanks guys, my heroes. Left to right, Frank, Brett,
Luis, Brayden and Avery.
Women
Of Rotary
Nine members of Women of Rotary met at the home of Sue
Bleckmann for their March meeting. Fred O’Krent, president,
opened the meeting calling for reports from the various committees.
The meeting was very short due to the small attendance, several
members either being ill or in Florida.
Margie Lank introduced
Sue Bleckmann, one of our own, who presented a program on her hobby
photography. She showed us many wonderful samples of her
expertise. A very enjoyable program. Thank you, Sue.
St. Patrick’s Day themed refreshments were served by Sheila Bailey,
Marilyn Thyng and Sue Bleckmann. Yummy! Thank you,
committee.

Josiah
Carpenter Library Receives Grant
The Josiah Carpenter Library in
Pittsfield is awarded a $10,000 grant from the NH Division of
Historical Resources. The NHR provides grants under the Conservation
License Plate Program , commonly called the “Moose Plate” program,
for the conservation and preservation of significant publicly owned
historic resources or artifacts that contribute to New Hampshire’s
history and cultural heritage.
The grant is to be used to restore
the windows of this historic landmark. The Josiah Carpenter Library
was constructed in 1901 as a gift to the Town of Pittsfield from
Josiah Carpenter. Josiah and his wife, Georgiana (Drake) Carpenter
were prominent figures in Pittsfield and Manchester at the turn of the
Nineteenth Century. Mr. Carpenter was an important banker in
Pittsfield and Manchester for twenty years, and Georgiana was the
daughter of Pittsfield pioneer, Colonel James Drake.
Designed by
the distinguished architect, William Butterfield, the most prominent
and prolific New Hampshire architect of the late nineteenth century,
the brick building is a beautifully designed example of classical
architecture. The library has retained its historic structure and
period design, including the front facade of wide granite steps
quarried in Concord, sandstone pilasters produced in Indiana,
painted tin ceilings, extensive ornamental oak woodwork, intricate
molding, ornate detailing around door casements, handsome built in
book cases, original windows, and unchanged automatic fireproof doors
that were designed to protect the stacks. It is located on Main
Street within Pittsfield Center Historic District, and has been
listed on the National Register since 1980.
Although small, this
library is a major resource for Pittsfield residents. The old,
deteriorating windows are loose and drafty in winter. During hot
summer months they cannot be opened. The grant from NHR will cover
the restoration of half of the old windows.
The library also
recently had historic allied storm windows installed from funds from
a warrant article in 2010. This, along with the restoration, will
make the Josiah Carpenter Library a much more comfortable
environment for patrons. The work is being done by Andy Roeper
from Winn Mountain Restorations in Lyndeborough, NH.
