Washington House Lot Update From The Pittsfield Beautification
Committee
A big thank you to everyone who supported us in our first ever (and
very successful) mum and bake sale in August! Proceeds from that
sale are going toward restoring the town garden on the Washington
House Lot, including the rock that was recently moved to the site
and the plants that will complete it in the spring.
Dan Schroth has been busy the last several months mapping and
measuring the area for the new garden. Dan and Joe Darrah, as well
as Joe’s equipment and crew, worked several days on their own dime,
moving the seven tons of rock you see at the work site today.
Unfortunately, we have hit a bump in the road that has stalled the
project. We still need to excavate the Town donated rock from Rocky
Point, but we have not been able to secure a large excavator to dig
out the ledge. We have the volunteers lined up to move the ledge
once it has been excavated, and we would like to put them to work!
If you can help us, or know anyone who has a large excavator to help
us, please contact Carole Richardson at 435-8351. We appreciate
your support.
Old Garages And Gasoline Stations Of Pittsfield Fill 2013 Calendar
In the mid-1920s Adelard “Del” Pelissier acquired the old Adams
Garage Building, formerly a livery stable, located on what is now
the Bell Brothers parking lot. He ran his business there until he
erected a new building on the corner of Depot and Carroll Streets in
1929. This old photograph and eleven others accompanied by a Larry
Berkson history lesson are reproduced in the Pittsfield Historical
Society’s 2013 calendar available now.
A dozen old photographs dating from the early days of automobiles
depicting the repair facilities and gasoline filling stations
required to keep Pittsfield’s automobiles operating are reproduced
in the Pittsfield Historical Society’s 2013 calendar. Although many
of the buildings are now gone several still exist today. See if you
can figure out where they are and how they are now being used.
You’ll also enjoy the antique and classic cars shown in some of the
photos.
Obtain your calendar today for $10 at the Pittsfield Town Hall, the
Carpenter Library, or the Suncook Valley Sun offices. Calendars and
other wares will also be available at the Pittsfield Historical
Society table at the Congregational Church Christmas Craft Fair on
Saturday, December 1st.
New calendars along with calendars from prior years chock full of
great old photos, books on Pittsfield’s history, historical
Christmas ornaments, and note cards are always available at the
Pittsfield Historical Society’s office and museum on Tuesday
mornings, or be calling Fuzz Freese at 435-7777.
Pittsfield Christmas Tree Lighting and Children’s Store Celebration
Save the date, Saturday, Dec. 1 – the Greater Pittsfield Chamber of
Commerce will sponsor the annual Christmas Tree Lighting and
Children’s Store Celebration. Also, a craft fair at the First
Congregational Church will be held.
The day begins with the Pittsfield Elementary School PTO sponsored
Breakfast with Santa. Breakfast will be served for $3.00 per person
between 8:00-9:30 am in the PES Cafeteria. Photos with Santa will be
available for $1.00 each. This is a fundraising event for the PTO.
Then after a hearty breakfast, kids can shop at the Children’s
Store at the PES Gym from 9:00-noon.
Volunteer “elves” will assist shoppers up to age 16 in purchasing
gifts for their parents, siblings, teachers or friends. The Store is
open to Children Only – sorry, no adults allowed. Most of the items
are new or nearly new and can be purchased for $1.00 or less. Some
items are more expensive. There is also free gift wrapping
available. With this location, parents will be able to wait inside
the school and be warm (not like the “old” days of waiting outside
in the cold!)
Anyone interested in donating items (new or nearly new), Christmas
wrapping paper, Gift Bags (the wrappers love gift bags), tags or
tape may drop them off to the various donation boxes at Jitters
Café, Pittsfield Post Office, Citizen’s Bank, Northway Bank and
Kalily Studio (in Epsom- on weekends only). Monetary donations are
gladly accepted to help defray some of the costs associated with the
event. Please make checks payable to: Greater Pittsfield Chamber of
Commerce and mail to Greater Chamber of Commerce, Attn: Children’s
Store/Tree Lighting, P.O. Box 234, Pittsfield, NH 03263.
The day continues with Holiday Story Time from 3:30-4:00 pm at the
Josiah Carpenter Library. All ages are welcome to come to the
Library and enjoy some Holiday stories with Mrs. Grainger and
special guest, Nanny Rosebud.
The celebration moves to Dustin Park from 4-6 pm. The Christmas Tree
Lighting Celebration is fun for the whole family and is a great
community event. There will be Free horse drawn wagon rides, Holiday
music by the Joyce Family, cookies, cocoa, popcorn, candy canes and
caroling led by the local Girl Scout troops. Inside PYW (Pittsfield
Youth Workshop) there will be a Gingerbread House Display and
raffle, face painting, visit with Santa (who will arrive via fire
truck around 4 pm), photos will be taken and available to download
from the town website Or feel free to bring your own camera. Hot
chili, chowder, and soups will be available for a donation of a
canned or packaged food (or purchased for a few dollars) to benefit
our Local Food Pantry.
Get in the Holiday Spirit and decorate a wreath and enter it in the
Decorated Wreath Contest. Decorate it anyway you’d like, and drop
it off at PYW (Dustin Park) by 3:45 pm and the public will vote for
the best one! Winner will receive a Holiday Gift Basket, donated by
Carolyn Allhiser of Northway Bank.
The Suncook Valley Area Lions Club will be collecting new and/or
handmade mittens, hats, scarves and socks for children. These items
may be brought to the Tree Lighting and dropped off. Prior to the
Tree Lighting, items may be dropped off at Jitters Café.
The Highlight of the Celebration will be everyone gathering around
the Christmas Tree, singing Holiday songs and counting down to the
Lighting of the Tree. The Blue Star Mothers group will be there to
assist anyone who would like to add a Star to the Tree.

“What’s Happening At PYW?”

Morgan, Charles, Jack and Destinee
It has been busy at the Pittsfield Youth Workshop (PYW). PYW
participants went to the circus, saw Hotel Transylvania at Smitty’s,
went outdoor rock climbing, a trip to Funspot and an afternoon at
McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center.
The youth also spend time hanging out during drop-in hours using the
computers or playing pool. They can be involved in Cooking Matters,
or can learn new board games and/or work on some very cool arts and
crafts projects.
More than twenty five (25) youth spent many afternoons planning a
Haunted House. Because of hurricane Sandy the youth had only half
the time to build the Haunted House - but in my opinion, it was
terrific!
Our Haunted House Fundraising Event was held on Halloween night. We
hope that everyone had a chance to experience the terrors and chills
of our haunted house while supporting PYW programs at the same time.
We want to thank Jen Cole for helping with crowd control and
collecting money, and Dawn Hamel for the treats. We want to thank
everyone who dropped off candy for the youth. We can’t forget all
the youth who helped build the Haunted House, and gave up their
night to let others have a good scare. Great Job!
Upcoming Events: On November 21st PYW youth will be providing a
Thanksgiving Dinner for their families. For the last week of
November the youth will bake, build and decorate Gingerbread Houses
to be raffled off at the Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday,
December 1st.
Just a reminder: PYW Drop-in hours are Monday through Friday from
3-6 pm. We will be closed December 24th until January 2nd for
Christmas vacation. We also want to wish everyone a safe and Happy
Holiday!
Please feel free to contact Paula Martel or Zach
Powers at
[email protected]
with any questions or to make a donation. Make sure to check out our
website at

for our calendar of events or the latest pictures of what the youth
have been doing!
TOPS News

Well, I have to say Kudos to all those members who lost last week.
We had an awesome weight loss and that sure is a good thing to hear.
We have been busy planning our upcoming activities, like our
Christmas party. We are also having a massage therapist come to our
meeting to help us with stress, show us how we can feel better, and
how it helps our body and mind. Plus, a nice massage helps us get
through the holidays without all that stress, because we all know
how stressful they are. We are looking forward to that night!
We had a presentation on “Ways to Accelerate Holiday Weight Gain”
(and seven ways to put on the brakes). We all know we need to use
the brakes because holiday eating can get out of control.
Our best loser of the week was Thom. Great Job! KOPS of the week was
Pat! Again, Great Job! Miss Angel is Irene. Good job, keep up the
good work and you will be at your goal in no time. Kudos to the ones
who came in second!
We all know at Thanksgiving there is lots of good food and it’s hard
to stay on track, but if we just write down what we are eating and
keep track of that, it might help. Plus, after you eat, try to get
outside and take a walk. Send a plate home with your company and
that will be less food in your house. Most importantly, be thankful
for what you have and enjoy time with your families and friends.
“It isn’t what you have in your pocket that makes you thankful, but
what you have in your heart!”
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I hope everyone has a good week and
see you all lighter next week!

A week ago this past Sunday, November 11, 2012 at 11 am, the Post
held their annual observance day of Veterans Day. I want to express
my thanks to the Winslow sisters of Barnstead, NH for a special
musical tribute that was well received. In addition, Madelyn Winslow
performed TAPS for us in lieu of our normal bugler, Rob Freese who
was away on business; the Pittsfield Police Department for setting
up the temporary detour decreased motorized traffic noise and the
Pittsfield Fire Department detail unit that arrived in their dress
uniforms, well done to both town agencies. Keeping in tone with the
Legion’s agenda on youth, the local Scouts attended in force. In
addition, thanks go to the Beautification Committee that put the
flags out on our streets that weekend; thank you!
The post has an initial $3,000.00 grant from Home Depot Community
Affairs that will allow us to begin rehabilitating our Post Home
which will begin by building and installing a wheelchair ramp up the
east side of the building. Following the ramp, will replace the
back door and building a rest room on the main floor. The final
phase will be repairing the front porch to include installing
railings up the steps. Once all phases are complete, an open house
will be held for the community to stop by and see the changes.
The post still have raffle tickets available for a donation of
$10.00 each that will allow each ticket will be eligible to be
pulled five times each meeting. Tickets can be obtained by
contacting Diane Vaughan at 344-0265. This is our primary
fundraiser that allows us to provide a graduating senior from PMHS a
scholarship, funding for Boys and Girls State as well as normal
monthly expenses.
My Friend Peggy
Peggy Foss was born on March 17, 1949 in Pittsfield. On November 10,
2012 she passed peacefully to the other side.
Peggy enjoyed traveling, the ocean, sewing, quilting, crocheting and
just spending time with friends. Gifts from Peggy were always
handmade and special. Cooking was her passion and she loved planning
menus for holidays and special occasions. Her platters of Christmas
cookies were beyond compare!
In her lifetime Peggy had many mountains to climb and battles to
fight; but she was always optimistic and cheerful. She faced
everything that came her way with courage, grace and dignity.
Laughter was one of Peggy’s greatest gifts and was a part of
everyday - good or bad!
Peggy leaves behind her mother, Jeanette, her brother Buz,
sister-in-law and longtime friend Chris; her brother Peter and his
girlfriend Kelly. She also leaves behind some wonderful friends.
Peggy enjoyed watching her nieces and nephews and great nieces and
great nephews grow and change.
Her father John, brother Dan and favorite Uncle Donald went before
her; she was ready and anxious to be with them. She truly believed
that The Best Was Yet To Come!
Peggy’s family would like to thank Hospice and the staff at Harris
Hill for the care and kindness they showed Peggy during her time
there.
I’ll miss you, my friend.
