Mentoring Overnight Training....
Submitted By Paula Martel
Pittsfield teens gather outside the Yurt at the UNH Browne Center
the morning
after their overnight training for the Pittsfield Teen
Mentor Program.
On the second weekend of November, ten high school age mentors
gathered for lunch and conversation about the 2-day training they
were about to embark on. After a good lunch, thanks to Jack’s Pizza,
the van was packed with sleeping bags, pillows, clothes, water, and
plenty of food. We were ready to spend the weekend at the UNH Browne
Center in a Yurt (a round, domed shelter originally used by nomads
in Central Asia with no indoor plumbing, no electricity, no comfy
beds and no stove) but that didn’t bother this group! They spent
most of their Saturday participating in team building activities and
going over information about their role as a Teen Mentor, but I
believe that the most important thing they did was to bond as a
group!
This year’s group, as with most years’, is a very diverse team. Many
of them did not know each other well before the weekend, and if they
thought they knew each other, then they grew to understand, respect
and trust each other even more by the end of the weekend. Most of
the group would agree that s’mores, good conversation and funny
stories around the campfire was all that was needed!
On Sunday the bright sunlight that shined through the windows of the
Yurt woke almost everyone up around 6:30 am. After breakfast, the
Yurt was cleaned, the van got packed and the group was ready to do a
service project for the Browne Center. We cleaned all the trails
from hurricane Sandy and the storm that followed. After the trails
were cleared and we completed a few more team building activities,
and we had one final discussion about the weekend and the new
connections that were made. A full 24 hours after our pizza lunch,
we were heading home for a warm shower and a soft bed. In the coming
weeks, the new mentors will be matched with their younger
counterparts… Stay tuned!

Teen Mentor Project please contact Jeff Martel or Paula Martel at

Women Of Rotary
Eleven women met at the home of Sue Bleckmann for an afternoon
meeting of Women of Rotary.
After the business was conducted and plans for the Christmas meeting
were formulated, we each had a turn at telling of our worst job,
best job or first job. We learned a lot about our fellow members and
found it to be a most interesting subject.
Refreshments were enjoyed by all as usual and were provided by
Chairperson Marge Feeney, Maddy Pollard, Liz Hast, and Hostess Sue.

Pittsfield’s Family Cemeteries Book Published
Discover more of Pittsfield’s rich history in the newly published
447 page book, Church Cemeteries: History, Development and Headstone
Inscriptions.
The Pittsfield Historical Society has just issued its fourth book
about Pittsfield’s cemeteries complete with stories about the men,
women, children and families interred in the forty family burial
grounds.
Author Larry Berkson chronicles burials from Elizabeth Berry’s and
her infant daughter’s, who both died on April 15, 1801, through
Alvin Batchelder’s in 2009. He writes about members of Pittsfield’s
founding families and conveys tales of families that have remained
here since the 1700s. This book describes each cemetery, lists the
most beautiful cemeteries, mentions the least well-kept cemeteries,
and relates the most unique headstone inscriptions. Larry goes on to
discuss cemeteries that have themselves died, others that have been
moved, and those that can’t be found.
Dig into the meticulously researched 447 page Family Cemeteries:
History, Development and Headstone Inscriptions to explore more than
120 photographs, search the alphabetical burial listing cross
referenced with cemetery name and lot number, learn how these
cemeteries were named, and discover more about the colorful
characters who lived in Pittsfield.
This new book is also an invaluable research tool for those learning
about family history and can be used as a guide to locate burial
sites. Included are directions to each cemetery complete with GPS
coordinates, cemetery diagrams showing each grave site, and a list
of each cemetery’s headstone inscriptions.
You can purchase the Church Cemeteries book for $15.00 at the
Pittsfield Town Hall, The Suncook Valley Sun office, and on Tuesday
mornings at the Pittsfield Historical Society Headquarters on Elm
Street, or by calling Fuzz Freese at 603-435-7777.
Complete sets of all four volumes of the Pittsfield Cemeteries
series can be purchased at the discounted rate of $50 per set.
Additionally, all of Larry Berkson’s 143 books covering various
aspects of Pittsfield’s history will be available, along with the
2013 Pittsfield’s Old Garages and Gas Stations calendar, Pittsfield
Christmas ornaments and other items at the Congregational Church
Fair this Saturday, December 1st from 9 am to 2 pm.
