Pastor’s Corner - February 2012

Submitted By:Rev. David Stasiak, First Congregational Church of Pittsfield

There are more movies, songs and books written about love than any other subject. For a long time now, possibly dating back to 270 A.D., the month of February has been considered the month of romance.

Valentine’s Day is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, chocolates of every kind and of course, greeting cards. According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. Saint Valentine’s Day as we know it today, contains traces of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. There are a number of legends about St. Valentine and how Valentine’s Day came to be. According to one of those legends, Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor’s daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today.

As I think about the letter St. Valentine wrote to his beloved I can’t help but think of another love letter that was written centuries ago but is still as powerful today as it was back then. That love letter of course contains God’s words of love for all of us in what we know as the Bible. "For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son." "God is love." The apostle Paul wrote, "I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Somewhere it was said that there are three kinds of love. The first kind of love says, I love you if. I love you if you do what I want you to do, or if you behave the way I want you to behave or if you do this or do that. I love you because, the second kind of love, says I love you because you have money, or because you’re pretty, or because you’re smart. The third kind of love says, I love you in spite of. I love you in spite of your flaws, in spite of how much money you have or how intelligent you are or the mistakes you’ve made in the past. I love you if and I love you because are conditional kinds of love. In God’s love letter to us God says I love you in spite of, I love you without conditions. I love you no matter what you’ve done; I love you even if you don’t love me. I love you so much that I give you the freedom to choose if you will love me back. Shortly before his death Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." That’s real love, perfect love, Agape love. That’s God’s love. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Pittsfield Steeves.jpg

In October of 2011, Quinn Steeves, a junior from Pittsfield Middle High School, attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security in Washington, DC as part of his research for his Extended Learning Opportunity. The National Youth Forum focused primarily on educating scholars about tools the government uses to address issues of national importance. Quinn said that the program greatly increased his knowledge of the government’s current status in the world. The overall experience and gathered research will assist Quinn in demonstrating mastery of his ELO competencies and once complete, he will earn a half elective credit towards graduation. Quinn strongly recommends that more high school students his age keep track of current events and try programs similar to the one he attended.

Letter

To the citizens of Pittsfield:

Regarding Mr. Mitchell’s letter last week concerning the actions of the Planning Board, I would like to make the following comments:

1. Ted has been chair for the board for the last year and for him to claim he didn’t understand what his vote would do is ludicrous.

2. During the meeting Ted did suggest another Public Hearing. No one on the board made a motion or second so that issue died.

3. Again at that meeting Matt St. George asked, "Is this it, the item is done?" and both Jim Prichard and Ted Mitchell said, "Yes, this is it."

4. Because the vote went against Mr. Prichard’s desired result he and another board member pressured Mr. Mitchell into reopening and changing his vote.

5. Jim Prichard and Ted Mitchell met at the Town Hall on Friday, January 13th after the vote went against them and advertised and called for a Special Meeting and Public Hearing on January 19 and February 2 to reopen this item. The board never was consulted.

Is this why these people were elected? I think not. The issue here is Frontage and we all know Mr. Prichard has been pushing this for many years.

I hope the voters don’t get fooled into thinking this is different just because it says "Planning Board recommends this". It is still Mr. Prichard’s proposal.

Please show up at the February 2, 2012 Public Hearing to see for yourself the actions of this board.

I strongly support that you, the average citizen, vote No on all Zoning Amendments!

TOPS News

Submitted By Terrie Azotea

At TOPS we are going back to school with our new contest that we are starting. We will have our very own report card and hopefully we will all be getting A’s.

At our last meeting we had a open mic night. We talked about success stories and different ways to help us along with our weight loss. We also had a new member join and we welcome her and hope that she enjoys her journey of weight loss with us.

We will be having an up-coming Auction, which is always a fun night. We are a non-profit organization so every once in a while we will have bingo, auctions, yard sales, and raffles to help us earn money. We are a weight loss group that is here to help one another and give support and encouragement to each other; especially this time of the year when we are all having cabin fever and there is not a lot to do outside with no snow. Sure games and cards are fun but what do we do when we play a game in the house? Eat - at least I know I want to bring the chips and dip out on the table and, oh ya, grab the nacho’s. It sure is a easy thing to do. So if you find yourself doing this or have cabin fever and want to get out on a Tuesday night, come join us at TOPS. We meet at the St. Stephens Church on Main Street in Pittsfield at 5:30 for weigh-in and 6:30 for a meeting.

Any questions, please call Laurel Tiede at 269-8721 or Pat Smith at 435-5333. These ladies would be glad for a call.

"Let your most beautiful self show..Smile! Hope everyone has a great week and see you lighter next week!

Rotarians Meet Bill and Melinda Gates Challenge

Alley Boucher, Past District Governor, announced that Rotarians have already met and exceeded the Bill & Melinda Gates Polio Plus Challenge. Bill & Melinda Gates gave Rotary $355 Million dollars to help them eradicate Polio. The challenge was for Rotary to raise $200 Million by June 30, 2012. The great news is that Rotarians have met and exceeded that number as of Jan 17, 2012. Rotarians have raised $202.6 Million towards the $200 Million Dollar Challenge. The Pittsfield Rotary Club was pleased to have raised its portion in the first year of this Challenge

On another great news note, Bill and Melinda Gates have donated another $50 Million, with no match on the part of Rotary, to again help Rotary in eradicating this deadly disease. The goal of Polio Plus is to wipe this feared disease from the face of the earth and the end is in sight.

Obituaries

Steven A. Davis

Steven A. Davis, 96, passed away January 22, 2012 at The Presidential Oaks Nursing Home of Concord, New Hampshire. Steven married his wife, Alice (Vee) Vera of Pittsfield NH and raised their three children.

Prior to retirement he worked for the State of NH Highway Department. He proudly served the Town of Pittsfield as a part-time police officer, selectman, health officer, a member of the planning board and was a volunteer fireman. He did all of this with great pride and concern to do the best job for Pittsfield. Steven enjoyed extra activities such as being a member of Pittsfield’s Lions Club and the New England Sled Dog Club, where he served as President for both.

On his own time, Steven along with some of his friends did extra things like flood the local tennis courts so the young and old alike could enjoy skating all winter long. He was an avid sled dog racer. But the most important job he ever did was to be a loving husband and father. He was always one tough cookie on the outside, was never afraid to give you his opinion and to stand behind it but his center was caring and soft. His family loved him deeply and will always be proud to say, "he was our dad". Your job here on earth is complete dad and it was a job well done!

Steven was predeceased by wife Alice (Vee) Vera Davis. He leaves a son, Steven W. Davis and wife Barbara of Epsom, New Hampshire, two daughters, Sandra A. Davis of Concord, New Hampshire and Linda Gorman of Rollinsford, New Hampshire; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in June, 2012 at the Floral Park Cemetery in Pittsfield New Hampshire. Time and date will be published at a later date.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to Pittsfield’s Youth Softball League at Tilton Hill Road, PO Box 112, Pittsfield, NH 03263 or to the charity of your choice.
