Lifesaving Training Classes Counted A Success
Submitted By Nella Hobson
Jim Girard, EMT with the Pittsfield Fire Department, demonstrates
the proper way to perform chest compressions during a CPR/AED class
at the First Congregational Church.
Pittsfield EMTs Jen Tedcastle, Jim Girard and Lyle Deane, with over
30 years of experience combined, recently conducted two classes with
material from the American Heart Association, for the First
Congregational Church in the proper procedures for CPR and the use
of the church’s newly acquired AED (automated external
defibrillator). The Dorcas Guild donated the defibrillator to the
church in June.
The three-hour class involved the use of special CPR mannequins the
Pittsfield Fire Department employs for instruction. The recently
obtained mannequins, as well as the course materials, purchased
through the Sanderson Fund, were instrumental in learning the CPR
process and using the AED properly. Using the simulated AED
equipment purchased from the American Red Cross made the experience
very real, with students gaining familiarity, confidence and
proficiency.
In the case of cardiac arrest, it is imperative to administer CPR
immediately and perform chest compressions at a rate of 100 per
minute. Keeping the blood flowing to the brain and other parts of
the body is crucial, and the more people who know the procedure, the
more lives may be saved. Deane, with four years of full-time
experience, enjoys his work and knew he would be doing this job
since he was a child. “I love this job and I enjoy training sessions
like this one,” he said.
Pittsfield Fire Department and Ambulance is fortunate to have a
LUCAS 2 device, which will perform compressions correctly and
consistently (usually used in the ambulance) in lieu of rescuers,
who can become fatigued after long periods of chest compressions.
Thanks to the gift from Globe Manufacturing and Concord Hospital,
this device is a true lifesaver.
The church is only one place in Pittsfield where an AED is present.
According to Tedcastle, other locations in Pittsfield include the
Community Center, Josiah Carpenter Library, BCEP Solid Waste
Facility, Globe Manufacturing Company and both Pittsfield Elementary
School and the Middle-High School. Personnel have been trained in
all of these locations, with the first three and now the church, by
Pittsfield EMTs.
“CPR and AEDs save lives,” said Girard. “We are teaching folks to
manage sudden cardiac arrest, to keep the heart pumping, until help
arrives.” He looks forward to conducting a community CPR course in
the fall.
The Pittsfield Fire Department conducts many programs in First Aid
and other subjects for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, school
programs, ATV clubs, and others. It is often on the personal time of
the dedicated staff members.
The church offers its profound thanks to Jen, Jim and Lyle for their
friendliness, expertise and professionalism during the classes and
for their service to the citizens of Pittsfield and surrounding
communities.

TRICARE Prime Enrollment Fees To Increase
Submitted By Merrill A. Vaughan, Commander
American Legion Peterson-Cram Post 75 Pittsfield, NH 03263
New TRICARE Prime enrollment fees for uniformed service retirees and
their families will begin October 1. Retirees who were enrolled
before October 1, 2011 will see a more significant increase since
their enrollment fee remained at the 2011 levels of $230 and $460
per year when the fees increased last year.
The National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2012 allows for
the annual increase of TRICARE Prime enrollment fees for most
retired beneficiaries based on the annual cost-of-living adjustment.
Exceptions to annual increases are for survivors of deceased
active-duty sponsors and medically retired service members and their
dependents.
Here’s how the increase will affect beneficiaries enrolled before
Oct. 1, 2011:
• People now pay $230 per year for individual coverage, and $460
per year for family coverage. Beginning October 1, individual
coverage is $269.28 per year, and family coverage is $538.56 per
year.
Beneficiaries enrolled on or after October 1, 2011, including all
new enrollments:
• People now pay $260 per year for individual coverage, and $520 per
year for family coverage. Beginning October 1, individual coverage
is $269.28 per year, and family coverage is $538.56 per year.
All TRICARE Prime enrollees are required to pay annual enrollment
fees, except active-duty service and family members, transitional
survivors, and beneficiaries younger than 65 with Medicare Parts A
and B.

The 1st Annual Duck Derby was held as one of the events at the Old
Home Day Celebration in Pittsfield. It was a great success and
fun was had by all. Pittsfield Basketball Players Tyler Booth and
Phil Gordon present Eleanor Joyce with $630 in prize money as her
adopted duck crossed the finish line first.
Letter
On August 7th the town of Pittsfield would like to ask for a
franchise fee (tax) on our cable bills. Between 1% and 5%, which
could add up to $3 plus to the average bill. If this so called
franchise fee is passed, what’s next? Phone, lights, and anything
else they think of?
The consumer pays enough now for the services without adding more
into our already bad economy. Please say “No.”

is free. Just let the gate person know that you are coming in to do
the story walk. We have had lots of supportive young parents this
year which makes the area more fun.
Monday we started our third and last set of swim lessons for the
season. If you missed signing up, come down and talk to Mike or
Minni and we will see if we can fit your child into an appropriate
class. The lessons are $10 per child.

until 7 pm. Saturday, August 4th, Balloon Rally Weekend we will

Pittsfield SADD Excels With Their Live Sober And Drive Campaign
Pittsfield SADD is pleased to say the “Live Sober and Drive”
campaign is making wonderful progress since they presented to Youth
Venture in May.
If you don’t already know, the Pittsfield’s Live Sober and Drive
campaign was recently founded by a couple of local teen students.
Live Sober and Drive has set out with the purpose to spread
awareness and prevent drinking and driving in the town of
Pittsfield.
Live Sober and Drive was inspired because this is not just occurring
in our area, but all over the world. We feel that by attacking the
problem in our community, it’s something we can do in taking a step
forward in ending this problem permanently.
Our plan to address this issue is to spread awareness through
education. We will also be holding events to give teens something to
do rather than party on Friday or Saturday night. We have actually
already held one of our events.
This year at the Pittsfield Middle High School graduation, Live
Sober and Drive had kids from the PYW write out little notes to the
graduating class. These notes said things like “Be safe when you
celebrate, don’t drink and drive” and “Friends don’t let friends
drink and drive.” During the graduation a couple of the members from
Live Sober and Drive went out and put these notes on every car in
the parking lot. Live Sober and Drive felt this was very successful.
We will also be holding a Pizza Party/Movie Night, Lock-In and you
will also be able to catch us at the Balloon Rally. Another thing
Live Sober and Drive will be doing is a Pledge Banner. We will be
getting a banner and having teens pledge they will not drink and
drive.
Pittsfield SADD is always happy to have new members and ideas. If
you are interested in joining Pittsfield SADD “Live Sober and Drive”
in their mission to stop this problem, you can get information about
us at facebook.com/PittsfieldSADD. Our facebook page has meeting
times, upcoming events and other information about us.
If you have more questions, you can also email our
adult supervisor Kristen Tracey for more information:
