Kid’s Theater Workshop To Present Xanadu, Jr!

Director Maye Hart has announced that this year’s Kid’s Theater Workshop will stage the 1980’s phenomenon, Xanadu, Jr. Auditions will be held on Sunday, December 15 at 4 pm and again on Monday, December 16 at 4 pm. Auditioners will learn a part of a song from the show and some simple dance steps at the audition, and they will be asked to read from the script.

It’s time to believe in magic with XANADU JR! It’s 1980 and the magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, as he strives to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time - the first roller disco! But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos abounds.

This hilarious, roller skating, musical adventure about following your dreams, rolls along with a hit score composed by pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne and John Farrar which has been adapted for the MTI Broadway Junior Collection. With songs including, “Magic”, “All Over The World”, “Suddenly”, “I’m Alive”, “Evil Woman” and “Xanadu”, to name a few. This Jr. title still has all the fun and excitement of the original production. It’s hilarity on wheels for children, adults and anyone who has ever wanted to feel inspired. You’ll want to keep the music in your head, and XANADU JR! in your heart, forever.

The Kid’s Theater Workshop is a program designed to introduce kids to performing on stage, and the show is presented to local schools in two matinee performances and three evening performances. This year, the show will run February 18 to February 22, right before winter vacation. The program is open to kids from age 8 to 18, and is for kids who want to be on stage and for kids who would prefer more technical positions, such as lights, sound, and stage management. For more information, contact Maye Hart at [email protected].

Concord Hospital Spirit Of Giving Campaign

-Pajamas Needed For Pediatric Patients

This holiday season, consider adding an additional gift to your gift list for young pediatric, emergency department or Family Health Center patients at Concord Hospital.  Often-times a young patient’s clothing is rendered un-wearable upon their arrival at Concord Hospital. Your gift of new pajamas (all seasons), socks and undergarments are needed to ensure that every child is discharged with proper clothing.

Support for well-child visits, behavioral health counseling, prenatal vitamins and fluoride treatments are also needed for Concord Hospital Family Health Center and Dental Clinic patients. The Center remains committed to meeting the health needs of individuals within our community regardless of their ability to pay.

Giving trees and clothing gift receptacle bins are located in Concord Hospital’s Visitor lobby. If your group or organization would like to get involved with the Spirit of Giving campaign, contact Concord Hospital Trust at 225-2711 ext. 3076 or [email protected].

Pittsfield barometer.jpg

We’re halfway there - and the barometric pressure is rising!  The Pittsfield  Historical Society continues with its latest major fundraising project – to  vinyl side three exterior walls of their museum at 13 Elm Street (the front of the building will remain painted wooden clapboards).  The goal is $9800, and we are pleased to announce we have reached our halfway mark.  We are still looking for donations, big or small, to preserve the building that houses Pittsfield’s history, so please drop in on Tuesday mornings at the Museum, from 9 AM to noon, or mail your donation to the Society at PO Box 173, Pittsfield, NH  03263.

Pittsfield puzzle.jpg

Are you puzzled with what to buy your favorite relative for Christmas?  Be puzzled no longer - because just in time for the holidays the Pittsfield Historical Society has the answer, actually two of them.  Jigsaw puzzles, a 300-piece ($20) depicting Lyman Park, and the popular 500-piece ($25) of the Pittsfield Hot Air Balloon Rally (photo by Barry Nation).  Both are available at the Society’s Museum, open Tuesdays from 9 AM to noon, and at the Pittsfield Town Hall.

Pittsfield Middle High School Presents A Christmas Carol

By Emily Little

Get into the “spirit” of Christmas! With the weather getting colder and the holidays closer, it’s the ideal time to sit down in a warm, comfortable setting with some good live entertainment. PMHS’s drama club is offering just that on December thirteenth for an evening show and fifteenth for a matinée. They welcome you to join them in the school lecture hall, which offers a cozier environment than the gymnasium, where their plays are usually held. Enjoy a cup of hot cocoa while experiencing the festive play, A Christmas Carol. Pittsfield’s talented young actors will be sure to give you a good laugh and a warm heart. The students have been working hard on this production for months and are excited to share their joy and love of this holiday classic with the community.

Originally written as a novella by Charles Dickens in 1834, A Christmas Carol was very quickly successful. Written in Victorian Britain, a time where old Christmas traditions were remembered and new ones welcomed, the story recognized the desire for both new and old traditions and included them, pleasing many readers and gaining much success. A Christmas Carol is thought to have brought happier times to Britain and America, offering a merry tale after a dark time, and therefore having a great effect on the countries. After the book by Charles Dickens was published it received much attention and still does today as copies are still printed. Many adaptations have been made, and a variety of plays and movies have been created from it.

In this particular production of A Christmas Carol performed by the PMHS Drama Club, along with many familiar young actors and a few new students, you can find one of the school’s faculty members playing a major role. This teacher may be hard to recognize in his makeup and costume, but he is known by a lot of the community and will be a sight to see. Come on down to PMHS and see if you can spot the teacher who may not be expected to participate in the drama club, but who fits his role well with his awesome presence!

The Pittsfield Middle High School Drama Club invites you to come experience their magical performance of A Christmas Carol on Friday, December 13 at 7:00pm and Sunday, December 15 at 1:00pm. Tickets are on sale at the door ($10 for adults, $8 for students). Please e-mail director Joshua Shawver at [email protected] or director Anne Banks at [email protected] with any questions.

Extra show added! Saturday (12/14/13 at 1:00)

“Meet Our Members” – Kristen Ahearn

Pittsfield_Fire_MOM_K_Ahearn.jpg

Next up in Pittsfield Fire Department’s “Meet Our Members” series is FF/EMT Kristen Ahearn.

Q: How long have you been a Firefighter/EMT?  How long have you been with the Pittsfield Fire Department?

A: I started as an Explorer back in 1993 in Bennington.  From there I joined the Bennington Fire Department as a firefighter in 1998 and got my EMT license the same year.  I was hired in Pittsfield in 2001.

Q: You’re the force behind the Sec ret Santa program.  Can you tell us about your involvement?

A: I helped sort toys when the Pittsfield Police Department ran the program.  In 2005, I was offered the chance to coordinate the program while I was out on maternity leave. After a few years of trial and error, Jen Tedcastle and I had the program running very smoothly.

We assist families in Pittsfield who need help providing toys/gifts for their children at Christmas.  The goal is to make sure each child receives a warm outfit, jacket and boots, if they are needed, and a couple of toys.  I’m blessed to have several behind the scene “elves,” as well as many generous businesses and individuals who contribute to make it possible every year.  The program has always been run completely by donations. Different town departments have run it over the years.

Q: Do you have a special area of interest?

A: I’m partial to community involvement.  The more we are involved in the public, the less intimidating we are during an incident.  I enjoy talking to our seniors who are part of the call-in program, giving station tours, and helping educate people about car seat safety.  I’m in the process of setting up several classes that will help us educate the public and keep our community a safer place.
