Dorcas Guild
The Dorcas Guild met the evening of January 8 for the annual
birthday meeting with 14 members attending. Elaine Coffey led the
devotions and included Psalm 23, as it has great meaning to her. As
she read it from the Bible, all joined in reciting it and then
followed with the Lord’s Prayer.
Secretary Joan Riel gave her minutes of the December meeting, read
correspondence and circulated several cards for signing. Treasurer
Reny Boyd gave her financial report.
Nancy Fogg took the food basket, which will go next to Beverly
Murdough. Gailann Newton took the apron which will go next to Elaine
Coffey. The mystery package, brought by Joan Riel was won by Reny
Boyd.
January, being our mission month, various monetary gifts were made
to Mary Poarch of New Tribes Missions, Pittsfield, Epsom and
Barnstead Fuel Assistance Programs and the food pantries of
Pittsfield, Barnstead, Epsom and Chichester. The church’s bus
ministry was discussed and tabled until the next meeting. Service
projects of warm clothing and blankets for refugees will continue,
and this year we are adding “Project Linus Blankets.”
The Dorcas Guild books for 2013 were distributed. Thanks to Bev
Moore for preparing them. Mary Jo Powelson reported on the
Infant/Toddler Diaper Project, which will get underway the third
Tuesday of each month. Beverly Murdough reported on the completion
of the changing table for the nursery project. Members are happy
with the result. Joan Riel reported that this was the most
successful year for our Mitten Tree Project (hats, mittens and
scarves). It was voted to send flowers to two of our friends
confined to their homes.
We will be hosting the Sunday Fellowship Hour January 13 and again
February 24. The Wednesday work meetings will begin again February 6
from 10 am to 2 pm in the Vestry.
Since this was the birthday meeting, hostesses Corine Miller and
Elaine Coffey served cake, ice cream, crackers and cheese, grapes
and punch. Everybody sang “Happy Birthday” to everyone!
The next meeting will be held February 12. Hostesses will be Gailann
Newton and Peggy Jacobs. This will be “Banana Split Night,” so
everyone is asked to bring their favorite toppings.

The Historical Society is compiling a list of former Citizens of the
Year. Missing is who was chosen in 1964, the year after David St.
George; 1980 the year after Arthur and Vaulien Dame were chosen; and
1989 the year after Henry Stapleton was chosen.

Letter
Dear Pittsfield Voters:
On Tuesday January 15th, the Selectmen held a meeting “for the
purpose of offering an opportunity for questions to be answered
concerning the subdivision.” Questions had to be submitted in
writing by January 10th.
The AHG project is a large, ill-conceived condominium subdivision on
a Class VI highway. Many questions, especially from abutters, were
submitted on time.
The Town Attorney and Matt Monahan of Central NH Regional Planning
Commission spoke for the selectmen but did not answer most of the
questions submitted in advance, including why the Board of Selectmen
applied to the State DOT for a driveway permit for a private
developer and why AHG Properties has not been assessed market value
taxes on a lot that AHG cleared for a housing site on Governor’s
Road in 2006.
Since the Town Attorney must defend the actions of the Selectmen, we
may assume that she could not defend many of the questions and
therefore did not address them.
As acting chair, Linda Small allowed no one to speak during this
14-minute meeting except herself, the Town Attorney, and Matt
Monahan. This prevented the citizens who attended from hearing those
questions that were submitted in advance, in effect suppressing open
honest debate of the issues.
As many of you know the Public Employee Labor Relations Board
recently “slammed” the Pittsfield Board of Selectmen for attempting
to prevent town employees from speaking out on town affairs in
public or in letters to local newspapers. Apparently the arrogance
of our current Selectmen also extends to the voters of Pittsfield. I
think that the current Selectmen will need to be reminded the next
time we visit the voting booth that they work for the residents of
Pittsfield and not private developers.
Respectfully submitted,
Carol Lambert

From Good To Great
The Pittsfield School District is welcoming in the New Year with
both reflection and action and would like to share the updates about
the on-going progress.
You are invited to a Good-to-Great Community Forum scheduled for
Saturday, February 9th from 10:00-12:00 in the Pittsfield Middle
High School Media Center. Refreshments will be provided.
We will be presenting:
• Where we are with regard to student centered learning and
achievement at the start of our journey.
• How we have been reshaping our systems and structures to better
serve our young people.
• The progress we have made since implementing student centered
learning practices and the role of the community in that progress.
We will be discussing:
• The work that is in front of us.
• Opportunities for the community to support student progress.
Expectation of Participants:
• Participants will collaborate with other participants to identify
mechanisms that facilitate the continued success and implementation
of our student centered learning practices.
As a reminder, our efforts are driven and guided by our District
Values and Guiding Principles, which will be available at the forum
and soon to be available online. We are also guided by the Nellie
Mae Education Foundation Principles. These principles were derived
from extensive research into what leads to a high level of student
achievement. You will see that the District Values and Principles
are directly aligned with those practices that lead to success for
every student.
It is our hope that you can make this meeting. Your assistance and
participation is essential to making Pittsfield a center of
educational excellence and to prepare all students (PreK-12) for
career and college readiness.
Please contact Tobi Chassie ([email protected],
435-6701) or Susan Bradley ([email protected],
