“Meet Our Members” – Firefighter Chris Ward

Pittsfield_fire_MOM_C_Ward.jpg

Next up in Pittsfield Fire Department’s “Meet Our Members” series is Firefighter Chris Ward.  FF Ward joined the department just under two years ago.

Q: Why did you become a firefighter?

A: I’ve always had an appreciation for the fire department and its members.  Upon visiting an Open House two years ago I learned a lot about the training and tools required.  I felt with my 30 + years of electrical experience it was a great new way to serve my town and its residents.

Q: What aspirations do you have in the fire service?

A: From “day one” I wanted to make a difference.  I have learned that in order to be better prepared, we need to be continuously training.  I hope to encourage other residents with an interest in serving their community to visit our station. I believe that everyone has something to contribute.  I look forward to the physical and mental challenges the fire service demands.

Q: Chris is an example of community service and involvement.  He is a lifelong resident of Pittsfield and is the business owner of Ward Electric LLC.  What other community groups are you, or have you been, involved with?

A: I served on the PCDC Board of Directors and was on the School Board for 6 years.  I was a member of the Rotary Club for 17 years.  Pittsfield is a great place to live and raise a family.

NH Athletic Directors Association And NH Interscholastic Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Awards

The New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association and New Hampshire Athletic Directors Association will hold the Annual NHIAA and NHADA Scholar Athlete Awards Ceremony on Monday, February 3, 2014.  Division IV will be presented at 9:30 a.m. and Division II will be presented at 11:30 a.m.  The event will be held at The Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord.  This is the 27th year for females and the 16th year for males to receive this highly distinguished award.

NHIAA high school student athletes from throughout New Hampshire will be recognized for achieving academic and athletic excellence.  Award recipients are nominated each year by their school principals based on criteria which require the high school seniors have a B+ grade point average, letter and be currently actively in at least two varsity sports, participate in community service activities and serve as role models to their peers. At the awards ceremony, each student athlete will receive an award certificate.  Governor Maggie Hassan has been invited to address the group and present a Proclamation.

The recipients from Pittsfield Middle High School are Sarah Adams, Maxwell Tuttle, Katie Small, Derek Pike, and Stefani Gauthier.

Barbershoppers Announce Singing Valentines

The Concord Coachmen Barbershop Chorus announces booking opportunities for the 2014 “Singing Valentines” program. Several quartets, members of the Concord Coachmen, have been perfecting their harmony skills to deliver this ever popular Valentine’s Day surprise.

This year, quartets will travel throughout the Concord and Manchester area, pouring out sweet, tender love songs in close harmony. The unforgettable memory needs to be booked ahead by the donor, and will be delivered this year on Friday February 14th, Valentines Day! Although deliveries are often made to Sweethearts at work, home or in local restaurants, families also enjoy surprising mothers or favorite relatives particularly those alone or in nursing homes. The popularity of the unique presentation makes it prudent to book early.

Singing Valentines Chairman Lannie Wood anticipates another successful year of “pleasing Sweethearts. Imagine,” Wood states: “from out of the blue, four men dressed in quartet style, bearing a beautiful rose appear at your Sweetheart’s home or workplace for this great Valentine gift!

Anyone wishing to book a quartet to sing to Your Valentine or require more information should call: (603) 608-9768 Concord or 483-8295 Manchester.

Valentines start at only $39.

TOPS News

Submitted By Terrie Azotea

At Tops this past week our Best Loser was Kay and Kops of the week was Mickey. Kudos to those who had a good weight loss. We know that it’s a lifestyle and everyday struggle to stay on track. So, again, when we have a weight loss, give yourself a good pat on the back because it is well deserved.

We have an upcoming Inspiration Workshop and were told that if anyone can make it, you will be inspired and uplifted.

Our program was on “Name 10 things about yourself?  and  why we are at Tops and why do we want to lose weight?” It was a good question to ask ourselves and really made me think about things. As we all know this time of the year it’s really hard to get outside to exercise. Some ideas to help us are: do some dancing when your favorite song plays on the radio, go for a swim at a hotel, while watching tv, grab a couple of cans out of the cupboard and do some arm curls. Just a couple of tips for the week.

Well, I hope everyone has a great week and if you would like to join us on a Tuesday night, we meet at 5:30 for weigh-in and at 6:30 for our meeting. Meeting place is the Berakah on Fairview Road in Pittsfield. Any questions, please call Stuart at 856-4842 or Pat Smith at 435-5333. Hope everyone has a great week and see you all lighter next week!

What’s Up at PYW?

Submitted by Paula Martel

Winterfest Weekend this year was held during the long weekend, January 18th, 19th and on Martin Luther King Day. With Saturday being a snowy one, and bitter cold temperatures all weekend, many of this year’s events were not well attended. As always candy bar BINGO was a big hit!

PYW went snow tubing at Pats Peak on Saturday, luckily the winter snow did not affect our trip, and we had a blast with four hours of racing down the hills on our tubes! Monday we went to Tri-Town ice arena to try our skills at ice skating. It took some of us a little longer to get used to it, but in the end everyone started to get the hang of ice skating and was surprised how fast the time flew by.

With the changes to Winterfest still being new, not held in February, we want to let you know that PYW is still planning on providing trips and activities during the February vacation week for the youth in town.

We will start our vacation on Sunday, Feb 23rd with a trip to the Verizon Wireless Arena to watch the Manchester Monarchs Ice Hockey team. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday we will host Drop-In from 2-6pm with games and activities that everyone can enjoy. On Tuesday, Feb 25th we will load up the PYW van and head to Space Center to play some Laser Tag and arcades games. On Thursday, Feb 27th we will be going indoor rock climbing at Evolution Rocks in Concord. This will be our first time there, we hear this is a great place to climb!

Winterfest weekend has proven to be a weekend of enjoyment and eagerness for PYW. Thank you to the Pittsfield Parks and Recreation Committee for sponsoring such a wonderful weekend for PYW. Thank you also to the volunteers who helped at PYW throughout the weekend. As always, feel free to visit us during our Drop-In hours Monday through Friday from 3-6pm. Our spring, yes spring, 2014 newsletter will be ready at the beginning of March with an updated calendar of trips and special events. Check us out on the web at www.pittsfieldyouthworkshop.org and don’t forget to LIKE us on Facebook to see pictures of trips and activities or learn what will be going on in the future months. Hope to see you all soon!

In Oratorical Contest

Pittsfield (L)_JESSICA_R.jpg

Jessica R. Massey (L) receives her first place

check from Gerard LeDuc (R) District 5

Commander of the NH American Legion.

Jessica R. Massey, a junior at Pittsfield High School, captured first prize in the American Legion, District 5 High School Oratorical Contest held at Post 81 in Contoocook on January 26, 2014.  She was presented a $100 check by Gerard Leduc, District 5 Commander.  Jessica will now go on to the State High School Oratorical Finals to be held on February 8 at The New Hampshire Institute of Politics at St. Anselm College in Manchester.

There were two parts to the contest:  First, a prepared oration on some aspect of the US Constitution with emphasis on a citizen’s dues and obligations to our government; Massey spoke on “What It Means To Be A US Citizen.”  The second part was a spontaneous assigned topic chosen by the judges relating to some part of the Constitution; this time the topic was the First Amendment.

Jessica is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Massey of Pittsfield.  She is on the National Honor Society, Varsity Basketball Team, Restorative Justice Team, is the School Store Manager and is involved in the Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) program.  She hopes to attend Southern New Hampshire University to major in Business Administration following graduation.
