Pittsfield Crimewatch News
The April meeting of the Pittsfield Crimewatch was held on April 29,
2014 at Jitters Café on Main Street. Officer Webber first talked
about the importance of the Ride Along program where a citizen can
ride with an on duty officer that will follow a typical patrol.
Anyone interested should contact Sgt Walter at the Pittsfield
Police or by calling 435-7535. Officer Webber also talked about the
observation skills by doing a simple test with us all. He showed us
a series of photos and after looking at each one for only a moment,
he turned it around and asked certain questions as to what was in
the photo. Many of us guessed at the responses and at first, many
of us got the photo detail wrong. After pointing out the types of
things that would be helpful information to an officer, many of us
were starting to pick up on more information in successive photos.
The goal here was to help understand what information was useful for
identification and help increase our powers of observation.
Now that we have good weather and many of us will be out in our
neighborhoods or even taking a walk through downtown, pay attention
to what you see and hear. If you see or hear anything suspicious,
call 911 or 435-7211 immediately and provide all the information
that you have seen. Do not attempt to interfere with an active
crime scene.
If you have any questions on Crime watch, call
Officer Webber at 435-7535 or contact the group via email
[email protected]. Our next
meeting will be held Monday, June 9th at 6:30pm at Jitters Café, all
are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The Pittsfield Board of Selectmen would like to welcome our new town
administrator, Michael Williams, to town. Michael previously served
local government as an attorney with the New Hampshire Municipal
Association. Prior to that, he served as Assistant Revenue Counsel
with the NH Department of Revenue Administration. Michael lives in
Chichester with his wife, Heather. Michael looks forward to serving
the citizens of our community, please stop by the town office to
come and meet him.
American Legion Post 88 News
Respectively Submitted By Shawn Jones, Post Commander
The month of May has found me busy visiting various Legion Posts
with in District Five assisting with installing the incoming
officers of these various posts. Many of you may not know that I am
the D5 Service Officer and part of my responsibilities is assisting
the D5 Cmdr and his Vice Cmdrs with Post installations. Our Post
Chaplain Larry Hemphill is also the D5 Chaplain and he also assists
us with installing his counter part at the Post level. If you see us
wearing our D5 blue and white uniform caps instead of our post caps
you will know why. We where reminder by Dept. Cmdr. Anderson at our
April installation that we should be wearing our highest ranking cap
whenever we are representing the Legion.
May has also found me busy behind the scenes preparing for the
Memorial Day Parade and cemetery flag placing. There are letters to
be sent out to different participates, contacts to be made, flags to
be ordered etc... Thanks to the leg work of Post Service Officer
Shane LaBonte he has secured the rental of a portable Public Address
system to be used on parade day. As you may recall the Post voted to
spend up to $400 to purchase a PA system however we decided to rent
one for at least this year and test it out. I’m excited to check
this system out on the weekend of Memorial Day and preparation of it
being used on the 26th.
This year’s 67th Convention dates are June 20th -
June 23rd at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester. I expect to be one of
two post delegates going again this year. For more information go to
http://www.nhlegion.com. There is a
Convention Golf Tournament to be held on June 19th at Pembroke Pines
Golf Course. More information can be found at the Department website

program visit the nhlegion.com website.
We would like to welcome our newest member Cherylyn Randolph LeBrun
a former Army Registered Nurse (RN) who held the rank of Captain.
Speaking of members and membership the latest membership report I
received showed Post 88 membership at 69 members or 113.11% and
first in District 5. We continue to retain and grow our membership
and I couldn’t do it without all of your support and I thank you for
that. The day after our April meeting I received in the mail a nice
surprise from our National Department Commander Daniel M. Dillinger,
His office sent a congratulatory letter for our post achieving 100%
membership for 2014. Also included was certificate of appreciation
and a signed photograph of himself that I will post on the bulletin
board in Charlie’s Barn at some point for members to see.
“Membership is everyone responsibility; Ask a Veteran to join today”
Remember the 3 “R”s - RECRUIT - RETAIN - REINSTATE “The American
Legion Four Pillars of Service” “Defense - Veterans - Youth -

Granite State Hiking Memoir Author On New England Tour
Buffalo
And Tough Cookie Take To The Road
To Spread Their Message Of
Mentoring And Family
MANCHESTER, N.H.: When hiker Dan Szczesny and his nine-year-old
ward, Janelle, first set foot on the trail to Mt. Kearsarge in Nov.
2011, neither of them knew that this easy hike to one of the state’s
most popular mountain tops would change both their lives. But what
followed was a hiking odyssey that lasted over a year as the two
hikers cross-crossed the state on their way to a 225-mile epic
attempt to complete a little-known hiking list called The 52 With a
View.
Bondcliff Books is proud to present The Adventures of Buffalo and
Tough Cookie, a hiking memoir that chronicles the journey of the
author and his young but ambitious hiking partner as this unlikely
pair formed a unique and unforgettable bond that transformed both
their lives.
“This has been a highly anticipated book, said Bondcliff publisher
Mike Dickerman. “It’s about 80 percent memoir and 20 percent
guidebook. Dan’s stylish, heartfelt prose is sure to touch the
hearts of all readers, whether a peakbagger or an armchair hiker.”
The Adventures of Buffalo and Tough Cookie is available now at
bookstores throughout the region and on Amazon.com. Dan and Janelle
are currently on tour for the book, with readings and events
scheduled for libraries and bookstores across New England.
Patricia Herr, author of last year’s bestselling book Up: A Mother
and Daughter’s Peakbagging Adventure, writes in her foreword to the
book that “Not only did the two share outdoor adventures, but they
forged a friendship that bridged the traditional gaps of age and
gender.
Theirs is a team not formed of traditional family ties but, instead,
an earned and mutual respect. Dan and Janelle are a unique and
inspiring duo.”
And while The Adventures of Buffalo and Tough Cookie takes the
readers through some special mountains, the book is also a personal
memoir and travelogue of two friends. This personal account of what
happened when the author and his wife unexpectedly became part-time
caretakers of nine-year-old twins is a wonderful meditation on the
transformative power of friendship, commitment and the many meanings
of family.
Dan, the associate publisher of The Hippo, is a
long-time journalist and writer. He’s a member of the AMC’s
4,000-footer club and has written extensively about the outdoors and
hiking. Most recently, he spent a month in Nepal trekking to Everest
Base Camp. Dan is available for interviews through Bondcliff Books
or by contacting him directly at
[email protected]
PDF versions of the book are available for review
upon request. For information about the ongoing adventures of
Buffalo and Tough Cookie, go to

Pittsfield Fire Support Company Member Wanda Mullen
Next up in Pittsfield Fire Department’s “Meet Our Members” series is
Support Company member Wanda Mullen. Wanda joined the Support
Company seven years ago.
Q: Why did you join the Support Company?
A: I wanted to be on the Support Company for two reasons. First of
all, I wanted to help the firefighters and other emergency
responders to be sure they had food and beverages. The Support
Company helps out on the larger calls where the firefightes works
hard, often through a meal or two, and even longer. The other
reason I wanted to join was to support my husband Gary Mullen who
has been on the department for 23 years. Our 9-year-old son Garrett
also participates and he sure does enjoy the fire department.
Q: In what ways do you assist as a Support Unit member?
A: I help shop and prepare food, like chop suey, sandwiches, and
coffee, and then with clean up. We’ve helped out on calls like the
recent fire on Barnstead Road and also many of the structure fires
around town and flooding events. One year I helped make sandwiches
for the Reach the Beach Relay.
Q: Garrett is a real “fire house” kid. How does he help?
A: He helped making food for the firefighters at the Barnstead Road
fire. He has helped loading vehicles with the Scouting for Food
drop off and he helped his dad last year with placing firefighter
flags at the cemetery last Memorial Day. As a family, we often ride
in parades in the summer and in the Concord Holiday parade.
