Letter To The Editor

With the Primary Election coming right up, I wanted to share a few more thoughts on the governor’s race.

NH needs fresh leadership. It has been lacking for a while now and it’s starting to show. Andrew Hemingway is what NH needs. When it come to education, a Governor Hemingway would reject federal mandates which limit our ability to innovate as a state and as individuals. Having strings attached is never a good thing. He would encourage alternative school choices such as charter or home-schooling.

Our current governor doesn’t seem to be a big fan of alternative school choices since she nominated Bill Duncan or the State Board of Education. Duncan is an anti-charter school activist who is engaged in an ongoing lawsuit against the state challenging the school choice law. Hemingway would lead NH out of its involvement with the Common Core testing standards brought on by the federal government, designed to produce cookie cutter students. We need to be fostering vibrance, individualism, and competition in our students, not suppressive mediocrity.

And furthermore, this year NH’s credit rating was downgraded by the S+P from stable to negative. This is a symptom flaring up from an underlying problem of lacking leadership and innovating, inspiring solutions from our chief executive in the State House. We are stagnating. NH can do better.

I was raised in the best state a kid could ask for, so, when I heard recently that as a state we dropped from 1st to 4th of best states to raise a family, it really saddened me. I want many others, like me, to be able to continue to experience the benefits and blessings of responsible, smaller government, and a sky that’s the limit. Look up Andrew Hemingway on the internet. Election Day is September 9th.

Sincerely,

Willie Matras

TOPS News

Submitted By Terrie Azotea

At Tops this past week our Kops best loser of the week was Barbara and our Tops was April. Great job ladies! Kudos to the rest that had a weight loss.

We had an open mic night and talked about  different ways to help each other and how tops helps us stay on track, the support that we all have, and the friendships that we have made. We also talked about the benefits of our summer veggies and the different recipes that you can make with them. It’s an enjoyable time of the year to go outside and have the fresh herbs and just picking in the gardens. The taste is amazing and so are the pocketbooks when you don’t have to buy them.

We are a support weight loss group that gets together every Tuesday night at 5:30 for weigh-in and at 6:30 for our meeting at the Berakah in Pittsfield on Fairview Rd. We welcome new faces, so any questions, please call Janis White at 603-491-5532 or Claire Coll at 603-435-7271. Hope everyone has a good week and see you all lighter next week!

We’re reaching out to Pittsfield and the Suncook Valley residents to send me your donations of raffle prizes. Tickets will be available the night of the show and prizes will be called during intermission. Think you don’t have anything to donate? Think again; make a quilt, create a photograph/artwork, make a basket, write a poem, make some jewelry, buy a gift card, stuff a pillow, whip up some salsa, put together a themed basket of goodies, make soap and/or candles, bake some goodies, send a check, decoupage something, knit something pink, give a gift certificate, make it big or make it small, send it to Cabaret For A Cure, c/o Meggin Dail, 243 Black Hall Road, Epsom, NH 03234 or call me (603) 736-8073 and I’ll come get it from you.

We’re also looking for sponsors to help get this endeavor off the ground. We are putting together a sponsorship package and if you or your company is interested in receiving one and sponsoring “Cabaret For A Cure” a tax-deductible benefit for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides program please contact me at the phone number or email above. Sponsors can attach their names to supporting this event in many ways; buying music, providing refreshments, printing costs (tickets, programs, posters), advertising, decorating, flowers, raffle prizes, costumes, and housekeeping items, to name a few.

You’ll be hearing and seeing a lot more of us, so keep your eye on The Sun and please consider making yourself part of the cure.
