Jonas Glidden With ‘Our Town – 1980’
He’s back!!!!!!!!!!!
Thirty-five years later, Jonas Glidden, cherished teacher and coach,
returns to the stage at the Pittsfield Middle High School for a
slide show he first presented in 1980. He will be the guest speaker
for the Pittsfield Historical Society meeting on Thursday, Sept. 17,
7 PM. in the Lecture Hall, Pittsfield Middle High School, 23 Oneida
Street, Pittsfield, NH.
In 1980, Pittsfield High School went through a procedure to become
an accredited high school. As part of this process, a slide
presentation was prepared by Jonas and his wife, Elaine, to be shown
to the Visiting Committee on the first day of their visit, and to
serve as an introduction to the town and the school communities.
Join “Mr. Glidden” and see what Pittsfield looked like in 1980. For
those of you who were students at the time, you just may see
yourself and recognize former friends and teachers during the slide
show, or perhaps in the audience. But things have changed more than
you might think during the past 35 years. Come and see just how
much!
Jonas and Elaine Glidden taught at Pittsfield High School, later to
be renamed Pittsfield Middle High School, for 35 years (another
anniversary), from September 1970 until June 2005, before retiring.
They lived in Epsom for nearly 40 years, and have recently moved to
a warmer climate, in Summerfield, FL. They still have a cottage in
Barnstead, where they spend the summer months. Jonas has been a
member of the Pittsfield Rotary for the past 35 years, and served on
the Board of Directors for the Pittsfield Youth Workshop. He was
also seen on the stage during a few performances of the Pittsfield
Players. At the First Congregational Church of Pittsfield, Jonas
served on the Board of Deacons and was instrumental in starting the
Infant and Toddler Pantry there.
You won’t want to miss this one! Refreshments will be available, and
we will be drawing the Pittsfield Historical Society annual raffle

Drive Out Homelessness Golf Scramble
Rise Again Outreach, a Loudon-based nonprofit charitable
organization serving central New Hampshire, will hold its 3rd Annual
“Drive Out Homelessness” Golf Scramble event starting at 9 a.m. on
Saturday, September 12, at the Loudon Country Club on Rt. 106 in
Loudon. Proceeds go to Rise Again Outreach’s efforts to assist
homeless and low-income families in Concord, Manchester, Laconia and
surrounding towns. Rise Again Outreach is seeking sponsors and
participants for this important fundraiser.
Golfer registration is $85 per individual or $340 per foursome and
includes 18-holes in scramble format, golf cart, registration
goodies bag, full roast pork lunch and a raffle ticket for door
prizes. Walk-ons are accepted and registration begins at 8 a.m.
This year’s tournament’s major sponsor is CastleOak Securities, a

Pittsfield Area Senior Center Open House
Quilters of the Pittsfield Area Senior Center displaying their
handiwork to be raffled.
The Pittsfield Area Senior Center invites you to an open house on
September 24, 2015 from 11:30AM-2:00PM. Come in and see some art and
crafts that will be on display that were made by the seniors that
attend the center. There will be pictures on display of events that
occurred throughout the years at the center. You can also get
information on the different programs that we have to offer such as
fun items like playing cribbage, bingo, virtual bowling, quilting,
crafts, and art club.
The center also provides a bus service called the Rural
Transportation System (RTS) for seniors. This is a handicapped wheel
chair accessible bus, which provides transportation to Epsom or
Concord, Tuesday thru Thursday, for the towns of Barnstead,
Pittsfield, Epsom, and Chichester. Call 435-8482 for more
information if interested or come in during the open house and
actually talk to the individuals that use the service.
We also offer senior center community lunches Monday-Thursday at
12pm. The meals are well-rounded nutritious food that gives people
an opportunity to socialize while eating. On September 24, there
will be live music by Don Smith, during lunch. We will also be
raffling a homemade quilt that was made right here at the center. If

VA/DoD Online Service Tops 5 Million Users
eBenefits Growth Surpasses Goal Two Months Early

Participation in the joint Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and
Department of Defense (DoD) eBenefits website topped five million
users this week, two months ahead of schedule. VA established an
agency priority goal of reaching five million eBenefits users by the
end of fiscal year 2015. VA achieved this early milestone through
aggressive outreach efforts and with the support of DoD and its
Veterans Service Organization partners.
“Veterans are encouraged to enroll in eBenefits and file their
claims online through this one-stop shop for benefits-related tools
and information,” said Under Secretary for Benefits Allison Hickey.
“We have already implemented nearly 60 self-service features and we
continue to expand eBenefits capabilities to give Veterans and
Servicemembers greater flexibility in securing their information.”
The number of eBenefits users is a key measure of
VA’s success in improving Veterans’ access to VA benefits and
services and is reported on
www.performance.gov.
To enroll in eBenefits, Veterans and Servicemembers
must obtain a DoD Self-Service Logon (DS Logon), which provides
access to several Veterans and military benefits resources using a
single username and password. The service is free and may be
obtained online at
www.ebenefits.va.gov or in person at a VA
Regional Office.
“The successful collaboration of eBenefits and DS Logon is just one
more example of how the DoD and VA are working together to continue
bringing current and former Servicemembers secure online access to
the benefits they’ve earned,” said Mary Dixon, Director of Defense
Manpower Data Center.
The rapid and continued growth in the utilization of the eBenefits
website demonstrates the importance of giving Veterans greater
access to information about their own benefits. In addition to
filing claims online and checking the status of those claims,
Veterans can also message their VA doctor, order prescription drug
refills and obtain official military documents through eBenefits.
More than 7.5 million VA letters have been generated and downloaded
by Veterans that show proof of disability, income or Veterans
preference used in federal or state government hiring.

Pittsfield Players Seek Donations In Support Of Sprinker System

Since 2008 the Pittsfield Volunteer Fire Department has been
strongly urging The Pittsfield Players Community Theatre Volunteer
Organization to bring the building at 6 Depot Street up to fire
codes set forth after The Station fire in Rhode Island. The Scenic
Theatre, at 6 Depot Street, Pittsfield, NH has been updated with a
fire alarm system, but as yet, the volunteers have been unable to
complete the fundraising task to install the appropriate sprinkler
system that encompasses all three floors as well as bringing water
into the building from the main town water line.
It is presently our pleasure to announce that we feel we have enough
to sprinkle the ground floor (the theatre proper) of the Scenic,
“Phase 1” to the approximate amount of $37,000.00.
Unfortunately, sprinkling just the first floor is not enough to
satisfy the requirements of the present NFPA code and we will not
only need excavation work done and pipe laid to bring water into the
Scenic specifically for the purpose of sprinkling the theatre, but
we will also need to complete the project of sprinkling floors 2 and
3 (costumes and props storage).
We have given the Pittsfield Volunteer Fire Department our word that
this project will be in full swing by Spring of 2016, to be
completed before Fall of 2016. If we were to start the project now,
it would interfere with our biggest fundraiser, the fall musical.
The Players have been fundraising since 2008 through various extra
shows, using sponsorship when we can; raffles; selling refreshments
and working hard at events like under the Rotary tent during balloon
rally and other suppers. None of the $37,000.00 saved would have
been possible without all of our volunteers, fundraising committee,
generous citizens, and audience members.
The Pittsfield Players have owned the Scenic since 1991 and have
been in existence as a theatre company since 1968. We’re approaching
our 50th anniversary and would like to celebrate in safety. We are
hoping that area businesses and townspeople like yourselves, who
grew up in Pittsfield and its surrounding towns, will find a way to
donate to this fund and make the sprinkling of the Scenic no longer
a black cloud over us.
We hope you will consider either matching the $5,000 donation
challenge set forth by the Rotary Club or make any other donation to

In either case, your generosity continues to be appreciated and I
would love to set up a meeting with any individual or business owner
to further discuss our plans, what we have already done for
fundraising and any advice you may have for us. I would also like it
to be known that we are approaching other businesses in Pittsfield,
with much the same request and a letter similar to this one may have
already shown up in your mailbox. We are also pursuing grant
funding. If we should find the generosity of Pittsfield and the
surrounding towns overwhelms our needs, we would be certain to make
donors aware and arrange to return unspent monies.
