American Legion Loudon Post 88

Submitted By Commander Shawn Jones

Chaplin Larry Hemphill and Fred Osgood present Margaret LaBrecque Commandant of the NH Veteran’s Home with our donation check.

At our January meeting we had 13 members in attendance. Gary Tasker gave a report from the building committee. He and Stan Prescott have received two bids from local contractors. They are still going over the figures and will bring the proposed bids to the February meeting. We then may take up a vote to award one of the contractors the job of renovating the new post. Meanwhile Shane Labonte had contacted Home Depot and Lowes and presented his findings. He will continue to work on making out a grant application with the Home Depot Foundation.

Finance Officer Larry Elliot is also filling in for our Adjutant Joe Piroso while he recovers from a recent illness. We wish Joe a speedy recovery and hope to see him as soon as he’s well enough to return. Thank you Larry for stepping up and serving in two positions while Joe is on the mend.

Larry processed three membership renewals at the January meeting and one new member application. We would like to welcome our newest member Dale Williams. He currently serves full time with the NH Army National Guard and recently returned from being deployed. He and his new bride live in Loudon. We want to thank him for his service to our state and country. Thank you Dale for choosing Post 88 to join. We look forward to seeing him at future meetings. Chaplain Larry Hemphill volunteered to contact some of our members who have not renewed this year. Hopefully he will have better success in getting these members to remain as Legionnaires. Our current membership is now up to 85.44%, we are ahead of the January renewal target of 80 percent. We are well on our way to meeting Department Commander John Graham’s goal for our post to bring in two new members for 2016 with Dale on board. If you know of anyone interested in learning about the benefits joining please have that person contact me for a membership brochure. As customary Post 88 will pay the new member’s dues for the first year if they’d like.

Please start thinking about how you would like to serve your post as an officer for the upcoming year. If you would like to run for a position be sure to make your intentions known no later than the March meeting.

The dates for the Department oratorical contests for the High School contest is February 27th and for the Junior (middle school) March 19th both at St. Anselm’s College. It appears there will be no local or District contest as no students have expressed an interest in competing this year, despite the hard work that our Child & Youth Officer Mike Hartt has done to make students and parents aware. We will continue to promote this important program for next year. Mike was to attend an Oratorical Committee meeting on January 20th in my place. These contests are open to all students from grades five to twelve including home schooled. If a parent(s) want to learn more about the American Legion Oratorical contest go to http://www.legion.org/oratorical/about or contact myself.

We received a nice thank you letter from the NHVH in Tilton thanking us for our generous donation of $500.00. Also the Loudon Lions Club thanked Mike Moffett and myself for the donation of $75.00 that will be used along with a $75.00 donation from the Lions to buy dictionaries for Loudon Elementary students. Both groups worked in conjunction with the Chichester Grange to make this happen.

On February 7th at 1300 hours the Penacook Legion Post 31 will be hosting the following event: Four Chaplain Sunday Interfaith Memorial in recognition of their unselfish acts of heroism aboard the USAT Dorchester in 1943. Full dress recommended. Reception to follow. RSVP by January 24, 2016 Contact Information: Linda Brink 603-998-9839 or [email protected] Our own post Chaplain will be participating in this memorial service.

Pittsfield Volunteers Needed

Submitted By Merrill Vaughan, Director

Pittsfield Shelter Operations

At the present time, the Pittsfield Emergency Management Operations Center is looking for volunteers to help staff Emergency Shelter.  At this time, we are looking for Pittsfield residents only.  Experience in medical, child care and mass feeding using the school kitchen equipment is a definite must.  Even if you have no experience in the above areas, come join us and help out your neighbors if we have to open the shelter.  Training sessions have not yet been established but we are looking at training by our local EMT personnel and the American Red Cross.

If you have the energy to help out in an emergency and willing to put up with challenges, you will need to fill out the Town of Pittsfield Appointment Application, which can be found at  http://www.pittsfieldnh.gov/assets/municipal/2/AD_appointment_application_1445448340.pdf.  Once you fill it out, submit it to the  Town Administrator for approval; this way the Town will know who is on what activities.  You will then be contacted by Merrill Vaughan for more information.  If you have any questions, contact me at 603-344-0264 or my email [email protected].

Letter To The Editor

Why we all need to vote whenever we get the opportunity:

1. Voting is not simple. It takes a while to figure out the procedure. This difficulty keeps us sharp and teaches us there is a system for governing that gives everyone a voice.

2. Just by registering to vote and actually taking part in the Primary and our Town elections, you have taken the first step on what could be a long road in public involvement.

3. Really, when you think of all the people who have fought for the cause of freedom, dead or alive, well, it is the very least we can do to honor their efforts.

4. Because I’m thinking of getting a petition article on next year’s warrant that fines scofflaws $50.00 per election. Don’t let me catch you.

Respectfully,

Dan Schroth Piermarocchi

Floral Park Cemetery Fence Fund Update

Submitted By Carole Richardson

Now that we are in the midst of winter and we are all looking forward to spring, it is time to give an update on the Floral Park Cemetery Fence Fund.  Because of your continued generosity and support I have collected a bit over $10,000; this is the halfway point for Phase 3 of the project which is scheduled to be completed by Memorial Day of 2016.  I continue to be amazed at the outpouring of support - $50,000 has been collected so far!!!!!  I am not on Facebook but have been told by many that the fence has been a topic of discussion, with nothing but positive comments.

A fundraiser has been scheduled for Thursday, March 17th - St. Patrick’s Day at Jitters.  A corned beef and cabbage dinner will be served and all proceeds will go to Phase 3 of the fence fund.  Please mark your calendars and come out and show your support while enjoying dinner with family and friends.  (There will be more information on this event in the future.) Thank you again to all those individuals, organizations and businesses who have so generously donated to this fund, and ask that you continue to send donations so that funding will be available for Phase 3.  A continued special thank you to Paul Rogers at Jitters for allowing me to collect funds in the donation box placed on the counter (over $300 in spare change has come from that donation box alone), and offering his establishment and time to host the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner.  Thanks to Mr. Morse at The SUN for continually printing my articles seeking donations for this project, and to Andi Riel for mentioning the project in her Sunday Monitor column.  Remember your contributions to the Fence Fund are tax deductible.

Thank you for your suggestions and kind words, and please continue to send your donations to the “Floral Park Cemetery Fence Fund” P.O. Box 98 or 595 Tilton Hill Road, Pittsfield, NH 03263.  If you should have questions, please call me at 435-8351.

In addition, there will be two matinee performances on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 16 and 17, at 12:30 pm for local schools and home schoolers, so that other kids might see their peers on stage and develop an interest in theater. Tickets for the evening shows are $8 for kids under 12 and $12 for adults and can be reserved by calling 435-8852. If you are interested in bringing a class or group of kids to the matinees, contact director Maye Hart at [email protected].

The show tells the story of traveling salesman and con man, Harold Hill, who comes to River City, Iowa, hoping to sell the residents on the idea of a boy’s marching band. He soon runs into Marian Paroo, the local librarian, who sees through his con but also begins to fall in love with him. This classic musical by Meredith Wilson features great songs, dancing, and comedy.

The show features Turner Jennings as Harold Hill and Emma Molloy as Marian Paroo. Sarah May Schultz plays Marian’s mother, and Spencer Griffin plays Marian’s shy and reticent brother, Winthrop, and Isabella Cottrell plays Amarylis, a piano student of Marian’s. Ian Treadwell takes on the role of Mayor Shinn, and Lexie O’Brien plays his wife, Eulalie MacKechnie Shinn, and their daughters Zaneeta and Grace are played by Kaylyn John-Zensky and Faith Griffin, respectively. We have a town council and constable who can’t get along until Harold teaches them how to sing in harmony played by Joe Molloy (Jacey Squires), Alden English (Ewart Dunlop), Joe Garcia (Olin Britt), and AJ Robidas (Oliver Hix). Jacob Scruton takes on the role of Marcellus Washburn, an old friend of Harold’s who has gone straight and found himself a girlfriend, Ethel Tofflemeir, played by Katie O’Brien. Three town councilmen are married, and their parts are played by Tessa Keyes (Alma Hix), Wanda Anderson (Mrs. Squires), and April Keyes (Maud Dunlop). Johnny Anderson plays the role of Tommy Djilias, the local teenage heartthrob who’s taken a shine to Zaneeta Shinn. Also included in the cast are Cecily Schultz, April Keyes, Molly Keyes, Carly Griffin, Lily Michaud, Skye Parziale, Courtney Butler, Sabrina Sargent, Taylor Sargent, Damian Cunningham, Dylan Cunningham, Logan Connor, Kolbey Ryan, Addison Clark, Abby Cote, David Cote, Joseph Cote, Jordan Atherton, Samantha Simpson, Mabel Johnson, Dalton Swenson, Matthew Swenson, and Michaela St. George.
