The Loudon Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts gather around Gov Hassan after the parade.

I would like thank all of our members who participated in this year’s Memorial Day Parade. I heard a number of positive comments about the parade and how it was great that we did not cancel the parade due to some inclement weather. Others where glad to see Governor Maggie Hassan walking in the parade with a couple of our local State Representatives. It surely was a treat for the townspeople who, despite some rain, still came out to watch.  We thank Governor Hassan for taking the time out from her busy schedule that morning to help us pay tribute to our fallen comrades. I also want to thank the Loudon Police Department, Fire Department, MVHS Band, Cub Scout Pack 247, Boy Scout Troop 247, our local spiritual leaders Rev. Henry Frost, Pastor Jeff Owen and Pastor Josh Owens and Kathy Labonte and her team of musicians.

Our June meeting is now behind us of which we had 16 members present. We welcome two new members to our post. Joining us last month was Alfred Page of Pittsfield. He is a veteran of the US Navy. This month Kenneth Ward of Loudon came in to the post. Ken is also a veteran of Navy. We welcome these two comrades and thank them for choosing to join our post as we strive to gain new members and continue to look for new ways to serve our community.

We heard from our building committee members Gary Tasker and Stan Prescott. The parking lot project is completed, the kitchen renovations are ongoing and about 95% completed. We will be able to bring down our storage container and set it into place any day now. We’ll be looking for volunteers to help us sort and unload the container and move stuff inside the new Post. The committee is still getting bids on replacing the roof and will bring more information to the next meeting. We still have some exterior landscaping to be done by Tasker’s Landscaping. Some other things on the committee’s list are; decide on a flag pole and have it installed, exterior signage design, other equipment purchases such as a gas range, dishwasher and office desk. Larry Elliot will be working on having the storage container delivered and Gary will be working with Shane Labonte and other members to clean and paint the flat top griddle.

Joe Piroso let us know that we have been given 10 days in October to run our charitable gaming at the Lakes Region Casino. This has been our biggest fund raiser to date but we cannot count on this alone with our Commander’s Fund raffle. We need to come up with other ways to bring income and donations into the post in order to keep the doors open.

Our Commander’s Fund Raffle winners for June were:$50-Dick V, $25-A. Davidson., $10-S. Labonte, $10-D. Minton & $5-N. Olsen, congratulations to our winners. I still have a limited number of tickets for sale at $12 each and are good for the next year’s raffles starting in July. Please contact me at 496-0204 or [email protected] to make arrangements to purchase one or two. Why not help your Post out with our annual fund raiser while taking a chance on being one of five of our monthly winners.

Have a great and safe summer and don’t forgot to support the Loudon Old Home Day Association as they begin to do their annual fund raising drive for this years Old Home Day celebration on August 13th.  Our next meeting will be on July 20th at Charlie’s Barn.

Suncook Valley Rotary 35th Balloon Rally 5K

We invite you to join us as we remember Frank H. Donovan and celebrate fitness in NH!  Frank was a long-time member of the Rotary Club and a regular volunteer at the annual Balloon Rally.  He helped with planning the Rally’s 5K for many years and was committed to supporting road races across NH through his involvement with Northeast Delta Dental’s sponsorships.  Though not a runner himself, Frank was a dedicated “speed walker” and biker, an avid tennis player, and loved skiing and hiking in the White Mountains.  He believed in encouraging everyone to enjoy exercise, and we remember Frank with this race by uniting his love for the Balloon Rally, the Rotary, and fitness!

All proceeds from the race will benefit the Suncook Valley Rotary Scholarship Fund.

Floral Park Cemetery Fence Fund Update

Submitted By Carole Richardson

Thanks for your patience!  Many of you have inquired as to why Phase 3 of the fence project has not begun (it was promised to begin by Memorial Day) – I got an e-mail from Rick of Superior Fence Company apologizing for not starting the project on time, first because of other previously scheduled projects that had to be done by a certain date or he would be fined, and second, he discovered that the wrong fencing was delivered for Floral Park.  He has reordered and assured me that the fence will be installed within the next two weeks.  Maybe by the Fourth of July!!!!!

Thanks again for your inquiries, and please continue to send your donations for Phase 4 to the “Floral Park Cemetery Fence Fund” P.O. Box 98 or 595 Tilton Hill Road, Pittsfield, NH 03263.  If you should have questions, please call me at 435-8351.

June 21, 2016 Select Board Meeting Overview

Submitted By Carl Anderson

Police Chief Cain came before the Board with comments and a handout regarding the vehicle decaling issue. After some further discussion, I believe all involved agree it’s time to put the issue behind us and move on.

The Chairman of the Epsom Select Board met with us to get a feel for whether we’d support discussing sharing some police coverage between our towns. We assured him that we are happy to have their full Board over for more specifics in an effort to benefit both towns’ budgets while providing the coverage residents are expecting.

We signed the 2016 “Dog Warrant” for approx. 150 of last year’s licensed canines. State law requires certain wording for the paperwork that everyone who has not re-registered their dog must receive. It is delivered by Animal Control. At this Board’s request, the required paperwork will also include a message, verbal or written, that expresses the town’s understanding if you no longer have the dog. A call to the Town Clerk’s office could avoid any confusion.

The Housing Standards Agency asked for an increase in inspection fees. The request was tabled until a spokesperson for HSA can attend a meeting.

The Police Chief discussed requests by some local businesses for dedicated parking spots. He said the existing 2 hour parking rule is difficult to enforce and that signage restricting parking to only those businesses at certain times might help. This is another subject that could use every bit of the public’s opinion possible in order to be fair, if we address it. If you want to be heard, please find a way to let at least one of us know your feelings on this (or any) town matter, either by attending a meeting, stopping us on the street, emailing (addresses are on the website), calling- there are many ways to reach us and we encourage it.

A dozen more abatement requests were considered, some approved, others denied, based on the assessor’s recommendation. I believe this is the end of the abatements that were filed for.

A reminder that there will be a public forum following a brief Select Board meeting on July 19. We are soliciting public input with any new ideas that might lower our tax burden. Forum hours 7-8:30 PM.

There will be no Select Board meeting 6/28/16. Regular meetings will resume July 5.

Letter To The Editor

On June 14, I asked the new Selectboard what it had accomplished so far. In his letter to The Sun on June 22, new Selectman Carl Anderson stated this notable accomplishment:

“In response to credible concerns regarding safety and security at the Town Hall, we will be installing cameras both inside and out. Anyone entering the Selectman’s Administration office will now be required to sign in and out. ... Signing in and out of the Administration office should allow us to track missing items.”

“Credible concerns regarding safety”? Just across the hall from the Selectmen’s Office, the Building and Planning Office has its door not only unlocked but wide open whenever the Office is open for business. Members of the public can just walk in, and they do without incident.

Carl’s unspecified “credible concerns” seem more like fake concerns. So I encourage Carl to explain just what is the basis of these supposedly credible concerns, why have the Selectmen put the safety of the Building Inspector and the Planning Administrator at risk by not telling them of the supposedly known danger, and what items IN THE SELECTMEN’S OFFICE have been lost or stolen.

Carl said the security measures will “provide optimum working conditions more free of distraction so employees can concentrate on their tasks at hand.” But government in America exists to serve the public, and helping members of the public and providing them with access to governmental records. How are these things “distractions”? They are a Town employee’s duties.

So the Selectboard’s main accomplishment so far seems to me to be door locks that disrupt Town agency cooperation and public service, and cameras and sign-in books that spy on, track, and intimidate the public.

Pittsfield Girl Scout Troop 10300 consisting of Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors, presented the First Congregational Churches with an assortment of wipes and diapers for the Infant and Toddler Diaper Pantry.  The troop decided on a diaper drive to help local families as part of their community action project, It’s My World… Change It. They set up their diaper drive at the Pittsfield Elementary School to raise awareness toward helping our community.  The girls made their presentation of their diaper drive at their Bridging Ceremony, where five members of their troop Bridged from Brownies to Juniors this year.
